Brady to host a combined sidewalk sale and dollar day on Saturday March 20. Sponsored by the Brady Chamber of Commerce retail trade committee this event invites all merchants to participate. Coupons in newspapers offer a $100 cash prize via in-store drawings to be collected and entered on sale day.
On the last day of filing for trustee of Brady Independent School District and Brady City Council, three new school board candidates joined the field. For Place 1 on the board are Dr. M. Db, McWilliams, and Leroy Reese. Place 2 features incumbent Dr. Albert McCulloh and Mrs. M. F. Deans. Place 3 lists H. L. Bud Gober, Mrs. Dave Quinn, and Natalia Nellie Barrera, all new faces. In Brady City Council races Place 3 has re-elect Ralph B. Micklethwait, Place 4 sees K. K. Steffens in from Ike Davenport’s vacated seat, and Place 5 incumbent Kenneth Young runs unopposed.
Brady funeral director Bob Harrell Woodard, 30, was killed instantly in a two vehicle crash on Texas Highway 71 about 15 miles southeast of Brady. Ulery of Corpus Christi drove a beans loaded tractor trailer. Woodard was northbound with wife Ginger and daughter Pamela returning from Fredonia. Witnesses included DPS patrolman Graves and Sheriff Vogel. Woodard’s services set for Wilkerson Memorial Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, daughter Pamela, his mother Izetta Bergeron, sister Gale Richie, and grandmother Mrs. C. G. Featherston.
Brady City Council received a health department directive to stop burnings at the dump. Auctioned rules require burial of refuse and a future disposal plan once regulations arrive. The meeting also covered a new Ford truck purchase, staffing changes, park lease talks, pension fund merger discussions, and budget status.
The 23rd Annual Heart O' Texas Band Festival brings 14 visiting bands and about 1500 people to Brady. Schools from Winters Uvalde Sanderson, plus local groups, perform Friday night and Saturday with clinics sightreading and a downtown parade. Admission is 75 cents for adults 50 cents for students. many housing arrangements are in Brady homes and local motels.
The Rev. E. C. Pequeno of Iglesia Metodista Unida El Mesias expresses gratitude to Earl Finlay and Brady Monument Works for supplying the church marker. He adds appreciation for others assisting with furnishing the new church.
McCulloch County tax assessor collector Ver non Waddill Jr reports license plates DNW 71 and DNW 72 sold with buyers paying cash and taking all papers. He urges owners to obtain new plates early to avoid delays as receipts are not in the tax office.
Mateo V Gloria 75 of Brady died Wednesday at Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services pending at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Born September 24 1895 in Mexico he was a naturalized US citizen and had lived in Brady about 60 years. Survived by two sisters Mrs Benijia G Villanueva Brady and Mrs Margarita G Vasques of Menard plus many nieces and nephews.
The final voter registration count reached 3,468 with an additional 166 registered in a supplemental period. Tax assessor-collector Ver non Waddill Jr. praised the turnout, noting it was strong for an off year. Last year set a record with 3,864 registered voters.
Jeri Randolph daughter of Mrs Dorothy Randolph Brady is member of Lubbock Christian Colleges Meister singer Chorus. The group left on tour February 26 presenting concerts to three area congregations.
