Seventeen visiting bands join Brady High School for the 19th annual Heart of Texas Band Festival with a Friday show band contest, a sock hop, and a Saturday concert and street parade. Judges include Fred Junkin Leon Brown Everett Maxwell and Douglas Fry. Visiting bands span Class A to E with performances and awards at Brady High School.
McCulloch County 4-H leaders Mra. Floyd Huffman Mra Sim Gamblin and Mrs Rochelle will join state officials at the second annual Texas 4 H Adult Leader Forum set for March 7 to 9 in Austin. Lt Gov Preston Smith House Speaker Hen Barnes and others will speak at the event including Dr Bardin Nelson and Dorothy Emerson.
Brady's Bulldogs place two players on the All-District first team as Jerry Alexander and Johnny Sanders earn nomination. Mason and Ballinger Alexander led season scoring with 474 points. Sanders 37h. Royce Lewis and Chuck Priess get honorable mention as Papette star Janice Kenney makes Kirks S-AA team.
Brady Chamber of Commerce election committee counted votes for five new directors. Elected were Stan Wallace of Brady National Bank Howard Creamer of Brady Automotive Co Aubrey Bierman of Brady Municipal Gas Corp Bob McShan of McShan Foods and Edward Whiteley South Ward principal They take office April 1 and meet March 18 with outgoing directors to elect officers.
Brady High School Hand Hall hosts the Band Roosters meeting at 7 30 p m on March 6 announced by Band Director James Mallow. Marching films of other bands will be shown and final Brady Band Festival business will be handled.
A benefit variety show will be held Friday at 7 30 p m in the Melvin High School auditorium sponsored by Melvin Salt Gap Doole and Stacy The Uke n Four and the Swinging Squares will perform along with other local talent Admission is free but donations go to the Heart Fund Pie and coffee will be served after the program Mason County Singing Convention meets Sunday at 2 p m in the Nazarene Church in Mason Everyone is invited
The Brady Chamber of Commerce bought the Hughes property at First and Bridge Streets for 5200 dollars and will spend under 16000 on a new chamber office. The project aims for a central downtown location with ample parking and a 45 person meeting room. Construction begins this week and should wrap in about 90 days.
Twelve days remain to nominate someone for the Brady Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. Nominations must be mailed by March 15 to the DSA Committee Anyone in McCulloch County who is community affiliated may be nominated. The year’s service must be in the past year though prior services may count The award is limited to one recipient and will be presented at the April 13 banquet Bob Murphey of Nacogdoches will speak at the event.
Three Mexican eagles are said to have attacked the lamb crop at the Wilkerson Estate Ranch near Hext. Foreman Bill McCollum reported spotting three eagles Tuesday afternoon and found 12 to 15 lamb carcasses. An eagle was also seen in the eastern part of McCulloch County days earlier.
San Angelo's Invitational Tennis Tournament on Saturday will be the first outing for Coach Roy Wauson's youthful squad. Sixteen boys and one girl participate, with five advancing to San Angelo in open class for high school juniors and below.

Principal and Supt Reynolds urge active participation highlighting programs in reading remediation student government and “This Is America” theme activities with open facilities at Brady Junior High Monday and a campus assembly Tuesday.
