Boyd Hunt, principal of Junior High and driving instructor at Brady High School, leads six hours of daily instruction for 24 students. Each hour, two students drive under his guidance on a city-driving course using a standard transmission vehicle.
Brady's National Guard unit of the Combat Support Company Second Battle Group 142nd Infantry will depart from the National Guard Armory at 45 o'clock Sunday morning for two weeks of training at Fort Hood. They return about 8 a.m. Sunday July 10. Names of unit members include Sergeants First Class and Staff Sergeants David M. Barrera Thomas J. Caylor Paul O. Cade Clarence A. Friar Billy J. Hardin Amos A. Lewallen Lupe R Lira Forest P. Mitchel and Richard D. Young among others with ranks from Sergeants to Privates First Class and Specialists.
The Texas Court of Civil Appeals in Austin upheld a jury verdict favoring C. Priest and former wife Dean Priest. The ruling keeps 100 acres near Pear Valley in their possession and awards $10,000 in exemplary damages from Alamo Development Corporation of Austin and Antonio for deed coercion and undue influence in 1954. The suit, filed by Aubrey and Robie Davee for Mrs. Priest, stemmed from the deed transfer while the couple were separated and alleged wilful, malicious acts by the corporation’s agents. The judgment marks one of the largest exemplary damages awards in the region’s history.
Starling group announces a double elimination golf tournament at the Country Club. First round matches include Rick Rodrigue versus Barker and Jimmy Criswell versus Skip Priess among listed competitors. Rounds run by July 5, July 11, July 12, and July 26 with Bob Archer seeded No 1 and Jimmy George seeded No 2.
A Louisiana Hayride show from Shreveport Louisiana will perform at Brady High School Bulldog Stadium on Saturday July 2 starting at 8 p m during the Jubilee celebration. Headlining is Jerry Jerricho a Houston artist with All-Star Records along with Dee and Patti from Fort Worth and former Cowtown Hoe appearances. The Jones Junction Gang Original Sunshine Boys Mattie Ann and Slim are in the troupe. Reserve seats are 1.50.
L B Smith of Brady, as Texas Press Association president, will carry a gold diamond studded key to the 1987 convention and pass it to the next president. The key opens the Treasure Chest of the Texas Press in Dallas at the 1988 State Fair. The chest contains papers from all member papers of the TPA and 1938 era paraphernalia.
Jubilee stalls are fully booked with 136 horses locked in before the meet. Treasurer Charlie Darley notes early reservations, while track crews whitewash fences repair seating and relocate the judges stand for better viewing and crowd safety.
KE Robertson 34 graduates from the University of Oregon with a bachelor in business administration while holding a full time night deputy job. He previously served six years as a Texas Highway Patrol patrolman and moved to Oregon for family health. He will resign July 1 to join Winn Shinn and Company in Eugene with wife Jeanne and children David 11.
Brady banks show a modest uptick in deposits totaling 7,206,124 up from 7,097,111 in June 1959. Loans also rise reaching 2,?18,156 from 1,134,051, with Commercial National and Brady National figures cited for June 1959 and June 1960.
Carlene Brown, Brady High School drum major, campaigns to represent Brady and McCulloch County in the Miss Mohair contest at Kerrville on August 4. Activities include coffee, lunch, practice, the pageant, and a dance that night with sponsorship from the Chamber of Commerce.
The City Council authorized 1491 to Shuffield Townsend for a new four door patrol car with trade in. They discussed a proposed 24 unit motel on South Bridge Street requiring easement and facilities, ordered pavement seal coat estimates for Curtis Field and Richards Park, and spraying pecan trees at Brady Cemetery. A. L. Reed was hired to supervise the Willie Washington Park pool at 25 dollars weekly. Hank Pimm’s volunteer fireman wages were paid after injury. Jubilee manager Stef fens was approved to use Richards Park shelter for exhibits. Stop signs were placed at Laurel River West Sixth and Richards Park low water crossing. a new park sign to be erected on San Angelo highway. Ongoing issues of dust control on dirt Brady streets were revisited with questions on cost and oil storage.
Brown County Commissioner Howard O. Wilson faces a July 25 trial date in Brady after a change of venue was granted by 35th District Judge Conner Scott on one of four forgery counts. Wilson had requested the move from Brownwood to avoid public prejudice.
