Supt. C. A. Reynolds releases the second list of pupils achieving 100 on the second spelling test. Earlier a portion of students were announced as perfect scorers.
The McCulloch County Farm Bureau will host the High School Citizenship Speaking Contest at 8 p.m. June 12 in the school cafeteria. Judges from Runnels County will select three representatives and alternates. Last year’s winners Frank Carmichael, David Ricks, Becky Hester and Linda Malmstrom will serve as masters of ceremonies. Deadline to enter is 5 p.m. June 19. Contestants may speak on why they want to attend the seminar or why they are glad to be American. The public is invited.
H. K. Spears of the Santa Fe Railway retires June 2 after a long career starting as telegraph apprentice in 1918. Born in Merkle, he worked at Kempner and multiple Southern Division stations before late-career posts in Brady, Menard, and Brady again. He and his wife Vastelle plan family visits and active hobbies in retirement.
The Brady Municipal Golf Course will host the second annual Father Son Partnership Golf Tournament June 21 22 sponsored by the Heart of Texas Golf Association. The event limits 64 teams 16 holes and uses a flighted format with trophies for each child and the top four in each flight. Entry is 15 per team and a hamburger supper is provided Saturday night.
The Brady City Council approved a new electric rate schedule to fund rising plant costs and modernization. Residential bills start June with a minimum 1.00 and rising blocks from 4.0c to 1.2c per KWH. water rates stay unchanged.
Coach Tim Schmidt announced the adult weight program has begun at Brady High School field house. Classes meet Monday Tuesday and Thursday nights through July 38 with open enrollment for all.
Nelda Rae Martin of Brady received her Elementary Education degree May 23 from Howard Payne College after returning to college in 1966. She and her husband Warren, Melvin High School graduates, raised three sons Curtis Grant and Bryan while commuting long distances and balancing work and family before finishing.
Charley M. Deans 87 of Voca died at 11 50 pm Wednesday at Brady Hospital after a long illness. Services are 3 pm Friday in Wilkerson Memorial Chapel with Jamie Hemphill, minister, officiating. Burial at Voca Cemetery. Survived by daughter Maria Cole Buchanan four sisters Leona Holloway J G Millsap Ann Elliott Emma Brown. brother Lewis Deans Duncan Ariz. two granddaughters Harlan Lange Mason Betty Ellis Buchanan. one grandson Sonny Capps Crane. eight great grandchildren four great great grandchildren. Pallbearers from Voca: Herman Attaway Alton Holloway W B Buck Ellison J E B Hargrove Willis Hardin J W Behrens.
The Brady Chamber of Commerce will hold its regular meeting at 7 a.m. Thursday June 12 at the Plateau Restaurant. The move follows conflicts with the June 6 meeting night.
