The City Council announces free golfing for women at the Country Club course during August to spark more female participation. Alderman Harry Priess notes about 25 women already play and says the effort could continue if interest grows.
Sixteen Boy Scouts received higher ranks at a Wednesday Court of Honor held in Fellowship Hall of the First Methodist Church. New units Troop 402 and Explorer Squadron 402 received charters sponsored by Ener Methodist Church with Ed Tittle and K D Lindsay named leaders. Dick Wyatt presided, a San Angelo Eagle Scout, as 1959 Central High graduate plans for Texas Tech. Advancements include Second Class and First Class ranks for multiple scouts, plus a one year perfect attendance award to Chipper Lankford and Star Rank to Don Cavness Bin Tucker.
Andy Allen president calls Ol Houn Dawgs meeting for Monday August 3 at Simpson Lake Club starting at 7 pm New officers will be elected.
Brady Explorer Scouts Geeslin and Ather-Brady return home after two weeks at Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico. A grandson reports via card he enjoyed the trip, survived hailstorms, a tent wreck, and climbed Tooth of Time with details of his adventures. Cindy Ann Swenning is born July 10 in Neblett Hos Canyon weighing nine pounds? ounces with parents Dick Swenning and laude Swenning of Brady and grandparents listed.
Brady residents will see higher water and sewer charges starting with August bills after city council approved amendments on final reading. A new garbage collection ordinance passed and a council move to raise residential garbage from 70 cents to 1 dollar is anticipated.
UT invites Tony Dutton Claude Ryan and James Ricks to an orientation for prospective freshmen at the University of Texas July 26 29. Selection based on potential benefit exam scores and high school records. Two sessions cap 200 boys and 200 girls.
McCulloch County evaluates a state brucellosis control program to protect cattle markets. County needs 75 percent owner support and a public hearing before Livestock Sanitary Commission tests local herds. Tests cover all dairy and registered cattle and 20 percent of grade cattle with no rancher fee. County meets to discuss organization under the program.
An opinion arguing taxes should be itemized at the point of purchase and wages withholdings shown transparently. The writer suggests every business use labeled cigar boxes for state and federal taxes including payroll costs, urges open tax costs on utilities, wages, and social security, and critiques politicians for shifting tax burdens to consumers.
The city of Melvin schedules a Saturday August 8 revenue bond election to fund waterworks improvements including well work and possible standby drilling. Eighty thousand dollars in bonds would replace old issues with 39000 for improvements and 41000 to refund outstanding bonds, all funded from the water and gas system. The election will be held at the Community Center with W B Meeks as judge.
Fire early Wednesday morning caused only minor damage to the Roy Pallett home at 503 South Oak Street. A mattress and some clothes caught fire around 7 a.m. but most of the blaze was out when the fire trucks arrived. Pallett works as a mechanic at Duncan Chevrolet.
Roseann and Kay Holland of Kingsville enjoyed an outing at Granite Shoals and visited Mr and Mrs Russ Holland and daughters. Roseann continued on to Slaton for a weeklong visit with friends.
