Brady Baker Brady Bulldogs rally to a 55-49 victory over Fredericksburg. Mary Ziriax scores 28 for Brady while Barbara Hazee leads Fredericksburg with 31. Brady remains in District 18-AA and faces Coleman in the next round.
McCulloch County faces two local contests in the Democratic primaries. Filing deadline is Monday February 3. First primary May 2 with runoff on June need. State Rep. Terry Townsend of Brady seeks re election in the 5th District against Tom Henry of Burnet. County Commissioner Oscar Betsill of Doole vs David G Bishop Jr of Pear Valley.
Lt. Col. George Adkins of Brady presided at a ceremony in Samsun Turkey where a roadside fountain was dedicated in memory of John F Kennedy. Turkish villagers built the fountain as a sign of Turkish American unity and 300 plus attendees, including U. S. servicemen, witnessed the Lamb sacrifice ritual for purity and the departed president. Col Adkins’ wife Ebba Jean Johnson is referenced as the daughter of Brady residents.
Mr and Mrs John A Ward III of Washington DC welcomed a daughter at George Washington Hospital on Tuesday January 21 weighing six pounds and ounces named Anne Elizabeth. Mrs Ward formerly Anne Curtis is daughter of former Brady mayor Harry Lamar Curtis. Both mother and baby were discharged January 26 with Mrs Curtis flying in to receive them.
The County Live stock Show will go on at Richards Park despite rain fears. 4 H and FFA youths in the commercial feeding program compete with blue red and white ribbons for top prizes. Judging starts at 1 p m with blue ribbon champions for calf lamb and hog to be selected later, prize money totals 400.
A welcomed winter rainfall, dubbed a million dollar rain, drenched McCulloch County with 1.65 to over 2 inches across communities including Brady and Melvin. The moisture revived oats and wheat after years of cold and dry weather, with reports from Parker Pumphrey, Claxton. K O Effington farm, Melvin. Mrs. Oscar Conn, Fairview. George Veazey at Placid. and others confirming 1.2 to 3.1 inch gauges.
Four Rochelle youths win a spot as contestants in the calf scramble at the 15th annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Contestants include Lewis Bratton Mark Moseley Bill Bratton and Ross Johnson. The event runs February 7 through 16 at Joe Freeman Coliseum with 20 boys released to trap 10 calves per scramble and prizes from 50 to 315 dollars for livestock purchases.
The Brady Band Boosters meet Monday night February 3 at 7 30 in the high school band hall. Adults taking students to the Be and Festival should attend to discuss trip procedures. The trip dates are February 14 15 and discussion includes the Brady Band Festival in March.
Girl Scout leaders met at the Little House to review sale plans, publicity, and quotas for the Heart of Texas Council. Proceeds fund camp maintenance at Lake Brownwood, with last year’s activity building aims to be paid and finished. Brady kickoff set for Feb 20, with 48 boxes earning a campership for next summer.
Promoted to major early in January while serving with Headquarters XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg North Carolina. Major Underwood nephew of H E Smith joined the Army in July 1952 and is a 1948 Lohn High School graduate and a 1952 Texas A&M University graduate.
Johnny Crew of Brady named Mister FTA at the 10th annual District 11 convention in Winters. He is Brady High FTA Chapter president, Bulldog Band president, and school paper editor planning to attend TCU. Jerry Atherton re elected district representative for vice president of Texas FTA. 232 students from 13 schools registered for the Winters event.
R. F. Bob Carmichael and Wayne Rawlings filed for re-election as trustees for the Brady Independent School District. Both are unopposed, and their three year terms expire in April. The School Board election is set for April 4.
Brady residents are urged to submit paving projects by April 1 as the city contemplates summer improvements. City Supervisor James Feazelle notes ongoing paving work and potential drainage and water line changes, with August planned for completion and fixed rates per foot for curb, gutter, and paving. Financing options up to three years may be available with a property lien.
