A conservation officer Pearly Britt investigates a December duck hunt on the Little Pee Dee River in Marion County. He watches hunters exceed limits, hides to ambush suspects, and recalls a dramatic pursuit as three more hunters flee into the woods.
Brady and McCulloch County prepare a May 15 1976 vault burial on the courthouse lawn as part of Bicentennial activities. Jerome Wilkerson and Mary Evridge lead the effort seeking artifacts and letters from individuals clubs and organizations to fill a sealed vault to be opened in 50 years. VIPs have been invited to contribute including Lloyd Bentsen Grant Jones Lynn Nabers Billy Graham John Tower Dolph Briscoe W R Poage Gerald Ford and others. Formal ceremony set for 3 p m. with a speaker to be announced.
Brady churches join in World Day of Prayer at 10 a m on Friday March 5 at First United Methodist Church. The event honors a movement active in 169 countries with Protestant Orthodox and Catholic women. Participating churches include First United Methodist Trinity United Methodist El Mesias United Methodist First Christian St Pauls Episcopal and St Patricks Catholic.
Supt. Carroll Tatum outlines Texas Public Schools Week with Bicentennial programs in several schools. Open houses and classroom visits at North Ward South Ward and Brady Junior High invite parents and patrons to inspect facilities and student work while Bicentennial themes unfold in programs and decorations.
Ruth Petty Sutton 60 of Brady died at Brownwood Community Hospital after a long illness. Services set for Friday at Fourth and Bridge Street Church of Christ with Henry McBroom officiating. Burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Survived by mother Alma Petty Gatesville four sisters and a brother.
Jack Miller 77 of Brady died at home Tuesday night from natural causes per Justice of the Peace Joe Barekman. A First Baptist Church custodian, he lived in Brady 37 years and was married to Iris Mae Walters since 1938. Survivors include his wife, three sons, a daughter, six grandchildren, and several nieces. Service held Thursday at Colonial Chapel Brady Funeral Home. Burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. Born May 24 1898 in Denton.
An 1869 massacre near Soldiers' Waterhole on Onion Creek left 24 unmarked graves as a party of immigrants was slain by Indians. The article recalls the pursuit, the large Indian party, and the fighters who buried the slain settlers, with notes on the old military road and forts that protected Texas frontier travelers.
