Brady logged its coldest spell of the year with 15 degrees Wednesday night as a light snowflake dusting scattered across streets and cars. Snow moved in Wednesday morning then melted by daybreak while surrounding West Texas towns faced heavier snow and ice. Thursday dawned clear though temperatures lingered in the mid 30s.
J B Rowe of OK Paint notes the planned highway changes may improve looks but doubts the plan to remove dips. He jokes the dips bring in business from busted trailers and mufflers as he scans a pile of clippings. The San Angelo cemetery entrance access is under study after highway widening.
Brady High School announced class favorites with seniors naming Scott Appleton Linda Leach and others. Juniors Tory Femmine Jimmy Hill. sophomores Moevitys Harry Bowden. freshmen Connie Schae Kenneth Hudspeth. Various Most Popular and Most Beautiful awards listed by class.
Brenda Gary and Byron Bratton of Brady were among the college’s honor students recognized in a Friday night program on Feb 19 at San Angelo College. Dr. Floyd D. Boze, Texas Tech dean, served as principal speaker.
Rochelle coached by Kenneth Mitchell suffers a 108 to 55 district playoff defeat to Jim Ned in Ballinger. Hugh Doyal leads Rochelle with 30 points while Jim Ned dominates with balanced scoring and advances toward the championship by benching its reserves late.
Mr and Mrs Herbert Harkrider and their grandchildren Elizabeth Ann and Herbert Sue are due back Thursday after visiting with their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs E B Dorbandt and Wayne since Saturday.
Brady High School girls basketball tied Lampasas Badgerettes for District 16-AA crown in year four after returning the program. The co champions meet Friday at 7 30 p m in Llano gym to decide who advances to state playoffs. Manager Joyce Sommerfeld Coach Laurice Hunter and Manager Margaret Dennard lead the trophy ensemble with players Porcelia Bell Ernestine Sandoval Linda Taylor Joyce Haynes Mary Cole Lynfred Jo Otte Joyce Taylor Janice Davenport and Tommye Low in the photo.
The Brady Building & Loan Association becomes Brady Savings & Loan Association after a state certificate. Executive VP Jamie Williamson notes 66 thousand dollars in dividends last year and the firm has since 1922 helped hundreds with loans and savings. Har din H. Jones is president with H M Deaton and George Carruthers as vice presidents.
Sheriff Luke Vogel filed a robbery by firearms charge Thursday against 22 year old Carlton C Zumwalt in connection with the shotgun robbery of Young Oil Company on the San Angelo highway early Feb 15. A shotgun was rammed through a side window and the attendant Jame Adams was ordered to surrender cash. Justice of Peace Joe Myrick set bond at 5000 dollars.
Brady schools invite parents to visit during Public Schools Week Feb 28 to Mar 4. North Ward Visitors Day Monday South Ward Tuesday Junior High Wednesday High School Thursday. Night programs include high school discussion of graduation and testing Tuesday at 7 30 and Dunbar Thursday at 7 30.
Two Rochelle 4-H Club boys, Bob Bratton and Tommy Penn, won calf scramble prizes at the Houston Fat Stock Show. Each receives a certificate to purchase a registered beef heifer up to 150 dollars, with plans to feed and show the animals at the 1961 Houston show.
Mrs Kirby Huffman Jr of Rochelle is named crew leader for the 1960 Census supervising about 20 enumerators. Supervisor W G Stacy says the crew leader recruits trains outlines work plans reviews field tasks and handles difficult enumeration.
The Chamber of Commerce reminds members to return ballots promptly for the election of five directors. Ballots must be mailed to the CC office by next Thursday March 3.
A. N. Sanders of Brady Mills, Inc. says USDA notified the 1960 peanut support price will be 201.24 dollars per ton. The report notes a possible future raise but no drop. The 1959 support price was 195.50 dollars per ton.
Countians must file nominations for the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award by March 5. The selection committee, appointed by C-C President A. P. Waldrop, requires written nominations with sufficient information for a decision ahead of the C-C banquet on March 17.
Mr and Mrs Ross S MecCulloch and Debbie and Mike of San Antonio spent the past weekend visiting in the home of Mr and Mrs Leon Jennings. This county was named for his great uncle General Ben Me, his first trip to McCulloch County.
Belton Dominate Brady 102 50 in a bi district basketball battle for a regional berth in College Station. Tigers sprinted to an early lead and never relented, with Herbie Penn and Charles Reynolds scoring for Brady while Belton rode hot shooting and tight defense led by six footers. The crowd swelled as Belton sealed the win in a high tempo game.
A 102 to 50 rout in Brady gym marks the highest score since opening in December 1952. The prior record 91 to 89 dated January 20, 1956 saw Winters B team defeat Brady Bullpups, and the B team score had earlier surpassed the 84 to 76 mark from the gym dedication night.
