City quits fight over water damaged home

The City Council agreed to pay a $2,000 judgment to Marion Lemons of 1700 Old Mason Road in a water damage suit. Lemons claimed caliche in streets diverted water onto his property, warping floors and misaligning doors and windows, while the city argued heavy spring rains caused the damage. The council opted not to appeal and ordered caliche removal to prevent further water diversion.

City to spend 27400 on West Commerce storm sewers

The City Council agreed to contribute 27400 to the State Highway Department for widening West Commerce U S 87. Funds cover curb gutter and a storm sewer system to fix dips at Church and High Streets. Resident engineer Ben Dillon said money isn't needed before May 1 and the contract may be let in June.

Belgian Congo Missionary To Speak Here

Dr. John E. Ross, a missionary to the Belgian Congo, will speak at the First Christian Church family night supper next Tuesday February 24 at 7 p.m. He has served since 1948 as the only medical doctor in an 18 000 square mile area around Lotumbe. He will discuss his Congo work and show slides.

Sports Supper Slated at Lohn

An athletic supper will be held Friday night February 20 at the Lohn School lunchroom starting at 6 30 p m Plates cost 50 cents and 1 00 The event is sponsored by the Lohn School Board and faculty with proceeds to the school's athletic fund Entertainment will follow the supper.

Brady Band Boosters prepare for the Heart of Texas Band Festival to be held Friday and Saturday March 6 and 7. The Friday night marching contest will be a highlight with proceeds funding Brady band uniforms. Jim Harkrider heads committees with Boyd Hunt Lowell Brown and others handling housing tickets public address programs publicity parade marshal concessions and events.

Movie Stunt Man Chuck Roberson Visits Brady on Way to Houston

John Wayne’s double Chuck Roberson, a Texas native and veteran stunt man, stopped in Brady this week to visit kinfolks before traveling to Houston for the rodeo. He has doubled for legends like John Wayne and Clark Gable and appears in the film Wonderful Country with Robert Mitchum.

Marshal Matt Dillon actor James Arness made a brief 10 minute stop at FE. J. Brock's Service Station in Brady. In street clothes he drank a Coke while his pickup group had a flat fixed. He hinted at Gunsmoke fame and continued to Houston for personal rodeo appearances.

Eden Boys Take Basketball Title in District 21 B

District 21 B crowned Eden Bulldogs basketball champions as D F E Edwards of Lohn announces the win. Paint Rock won the girls title. District members include Eden, Paint Rock, Lohn, Melvin, Rochelle, Richland Springs and Eola.

Dogs Playoff Tilt Set Friday In Brownwood

Brady and Lampasas, co-champions of District 17-AA, meet in the Howard Payne gym in Brownwood Friday night for a one game sudden-death playoff to decide the bi district rep. Game time is 7 p m. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for students. Brady bus transport is free but limited to about 150 students. Lampasas won 81 38 over San Saba as Brady eyes a long term program with most starters returning.

Melvin Girls' Lambs Sweep San Antonio Show

Melvin school girls claimed first and second in the fine wool class at the San Antonio Stock Show. Mickey Weaver, a Melvin High senior, won first in fine wool fat lamb open class and his lamb was named champion. Barbara Gayle Taliaferro placed second in open class. County Agent Jimmy Casenbary attended the event and noted calves were scrambled by McCulloch boys Kirby Huffman and Gil Engdahl, with winner usa money awarded to 4-H projects.

Gilstrap to Speak at Brady Relays Banquet

Arlington State College coach and athletic director Claude Chena Gilstrap will speak at the Brady Relays banquet in the Brady High cafeteria. The event honors Brady seniors with attendees including Bulldogs players and invited coaches. Tickets are $2 for members and $1.50 for non members.
