First Aid Meet Draws 150 Boy Scouts From 19 Units

About 150 Boy Scouts from 19 units in the Tri River District will converge on Ballinger this Saturday for the District First Aid Meet. Each patrol will study problems and solve them using only self supplied gear. Scouts from Brady Troops 402 514 423 425 Rochelle Troop 471 and Lohn Troop 450 are expected to participate.

Menard Man Gets Probated Sentence

Talvis David Wilson of Menard was sentenced to five years for burglary of Penn Glass Sand Corp near Voca but the term was probated by Judge A P Allison in Brady. Wilson was represented by Spencer Brown, with District Attorney V Murray Jordan for the state. Oscar M Simmons of San Angelo was arraigned for burglary of the same company and pled not guilty. Trial date to be set.

J D Demp Branscum 94 longtime Brady resident and 1956 McCulloch County Distinguished Service Award recipient dies after a long illness in Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital. Funeral at Wilkerson Chapel with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery. Survived by daughter Mrs Clyde Maner Brownwood and many nieces and nephews.

Mail for Star Carriers Must Be Deposited Outside

Brady Postmaster T A Lankford says outgoing Sunday and holiday mail for San Antonio and San Angelo Star Route carriers must be placed in the outside box. Mail placed in the interior box will not be collected. He announced Brady will have Sunday and holiday pickups starting this Sunday.

Hully Gully Set Sunday At Brady Course

The regular monthly Hully Gully will be held Sunday at Brady Municipal Golf Course with tee-off at 1 p.m. The tournament will use hully gully rules on every shot.

Gates Installed to Lock City Dump Grounds

City council moved to control city garbage by hanging gates at the dump. Beginning February 22 the gates will be locked outside stated hours 8 30 a m to 7 p m Monday through Friday and 8 30 a m to 5 p m Saturday. City Supt James Feazelle cited state laws banning burning wet garbage and noted annexation and an ordinance are under way for disposal rules.

Mary Partin Wins 1971 Betty Crocker Homemaker Award

Mary E Partin of Brady High School earned the 1971 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow title after a nationwide Dec 1 exam. She joins state and national scholarship prospects, with a $5,000 national award for the eventual winner and 110000 in state grants.

Mrs. Delbert Wilson Heads Heart Fund Drive

Mrs Delbert Wilson is named Brady Heart Fund chairman with Mrs Sally Taylor as general chair. Local clubs including Rochelle Study Club Melvin Twentieth Century Club and Dodge unit support roles with Hardin Jones as treasurer and Mrs Amos Lewallen as memorial chair. Heart Fund aims for peak activity in February with Heart Sunday door to door education and donations. Brady Multi-Purpose Center hosts weekly Story Hour for ages 3 to 5 from 9 30 to 10 30 a m each Tuesday.

Brady High Golf Season Begins February 27 in Bastrop

Brady High School opens golf with twelve boys out for the team. Fred McDonough, Vance Johnson, Kenny Pimm, Ricky Jackson, Darryl Huffman, Ben McCulloh, Albert Pearson, Rod Harrell, Curtis Martin, Douglas Jeschke, Ricky Gary, and Gerald Neve will compete. McDonough and McCulloh return from last year’s district winning squad. The squad to feature in Bastrop on February 27, with ten boys for the Brady Invitational on March 13 and five in Brownwood on March 19-20, followed by ten in the district meet on April 16.

Brady Population In 1970 Census Report

The final census tabulations released in the San Angelo Standard-Times show McCulloch County at 8571 residents, down 2.8 percent from 1960. Brady lists 1970 population at 5557, up 2.1 percent from 1960's 5338. Melvin drops to 290 from 401. The figures vary across published sets, making the official census unclear.
