The Standard shows roving camerapersons capturing Brady Junior High Lions and guests at the Lions Sports Banquet held last week at the Municipal Golf Course clubhouse.
Texas officials report continued screwworm control with 200000 sterile flies released in Hays County and 2 million along the Rio Grande. The Southwest Animal Health Research Foundation aims for 200 million weekly releases in six weeks as funds reach 1.4 million from state sources with federal match guaranteed. Representatives from McCulloch County served on the advisory council.
Guidelines for livestock producers to aid screwworm eradication. Inspect livestock especially newborns. Collect ten maggots from each infested wound and report to county agent. Do not move animals from infested areas until treated with Korlan or Co-Ral. Ensure origin treatment for animals from other states. Stay aware via newspapers radio or county agent updates to prevent spread and help elimination.
A cool front brought a light shower to Brady totaling .13 inch, while at Brady Veterinary Hospital the gauge showed three-eighths inch. Unseasonably warm weather has fruit trees budding and farmers hope for a "million dollar" rain in McCulloch County to improve oats and grain standings.
The County Commissioners Court appointed election judges for McCulloch County's 10 voting boxes at its regular meeting. Appointees include Brady H D Pradley and Herbert Harkrider for Brady. Pear Valley R B Smith and Richard Faulkner. Melvin Bob Armistead and Clyde Westbrook. Placid Gid Vick and Sim Gamblin. Doole John Brown and Hubert Crumley.
McCulloch County 4-H Clubbers excel with top placings. John L. Deans won first in heavyweight barrow and second in lightweight barrow. Mary Helen Bratton placed third with a lightweight Hereford steer. Gayle Taliaferro earned sixth in crossbred fat lamb at Brady county fair.
The Angus steer that won the reserve championship at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition was bred by Dr. G. H. Ricks Oaks Stock Farm of Lampasas. Dan Wade Crenwelge of Fredericksburg fed and showed the animal after winning the Boys Angus Show. He previously exhibited the grand champion steer in 1955.
Ten Brady schoolboy golfers travel to Bastrop Saturday for a match against San Angelo Austin McCallum of Austin and Bastrop. The squad, coached by Principal C A Ethridge, has four season matches and an average 32.2. Players listed with season scores include Archer 76 George 86.3 Broad 87.6 Criswell 80 Dicker 80.3 Little 84.5 Wilton 94.9 Steffens 85.7 Priess 88 Thornton 89. Only five qualify for Bastrop Invitational on Feb 24.
Mr and Mrs David Barrera of Brady announce the birth of their daughter Irene at Medical and Surgical Hospital on Wednesday February 14 weighing five pounds twelve ounces.
Brady High’s Pupettes beat Lampasas 31 to 28 to win District 18-AA girls basketball. Josephine Hernandez led Brady with 22 points, supported by Linda Taylor 6 and Judy Davenport 3. The team, now 7-1 in district, will face Rockdale in bi district play, as Coach Laurice Hunter praises Otte’s rebounding and Templeton’s clean foul record.
The Brady Bulldogs finish 13 7 for the year after falling 55 to 37 to the Lampasas Badgers in the District 18 AA championship. Coach Ed Whiteley praised the effort, noting the early lead and late rally before Lampasas pulled away in the fourth quarter. The win capped Lampasas’s district reign as Brady’s four year run included 29 of 33 district victories.
Gerald Duncan of Brady won the high school middleweight title in Brownwood regionals, decision over Ronnie Jeffreys of Coleman. Brady also featured J Roy Richie who lost in welterweight finals to Billie Bamber of Stephenville. Team results had Stephenville first, Brownwood second, Brady third with Jesse Haro Arthur Galindo and Manuel Sanchez on Brady roster.
Eighteen bands accepted invitations to Brady for the Heart O Texas Festival on March 23 23 3. Participants include Del Rio Lake View San Angelo in Class AAA Llano Fredericksburg Floydada Coleman Ranger Big Lake Albany Early Qzona Ralls Cross Plains Santa Anna Mason Ro tan Reagan County and Fredericksburg Junior High Mason Junior High plus the Brady Bulldog Band and Brady Junior High Lion Band. Four bands will stay in Brady for the show band contest Friday March 2 with the rest competing Saturday in concert sight reading and the Hardin Simmons concert. Judges include Douglas Fry Weldon Covington and G T Gilligan. A massed concert closes Saturday afternoon.
