Passing By notes Texas faces one of its coldest periods in years while Buffalo, Watertown, Pittsburgh, and Atlantic Coast areas endure severe winter. The piece highlights widespread cold, compares regional impacts, and previews spring as coming in about two months with a nod to the groundhog myth.
The Spring Race Meet heads for April 9 10 and 16 17 with three features the Quarter Horse Futurity Derby and Thoroughbred Futurity Trials on the first weekend finals on the second. Racing secretary Robert Strickland notes 95 QH futurity entries worth 7125. possible purses up to 40000. Derby 16 horses purse 1200 current 10000 potential. Thoroughbred Futurity 32 horses 2400 paid up with 12000 possible. Nomination payments were made January 15 with further due February March and April to complete purses.
City Council reviews utility rate study progress with no action. a special meeting set for Thursday to compare revenues and expenses. Bids open on city residence with John H. Richardson topping at 12500. Land and water projects discussed include a proposed Brady Creek bridge and street additions pending Texas approval. Water quality oversight by LCRA discussed alongside Safe Drinking Water Act updates. Staffing changes include patrolman resignations and new hires. Enoch Shuffield recovering after major surgery in Austin.
City employees in Brady held a Jan 27 party for Ben and Lela Teague retiring after over 20 years each. Lela directed utility billing for 22 years. Ben was a power plant operator for 21 years. They married in 1940 in Houston and have two children.
Punxsutawney Phil reportedly saw a shadow in Pennsylvania prompting six more weeks of winter. In Texas overcast skies muted shadows while forecasts point to continued cold weather with possible rain and gradual warming by weekend.
Brady High School Band Hall hosts the Brady Band Boosters meeting at 7 30 P M Monday. Band students will perform pieces for the UIL solo and ensemble auditions. Items include results of KNEL Radio Bake Sale and plans for a Canon City Colorado trip. Refreshments served.
Percy W. Appleton 56 of Del Rio died Monday in a Del Rio hospital after a lengthy illness. Services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Doran Funeral Home Chapel with graveside rites at 4 p.m. in Camp San Saba Cemetery. Born January 11, 1921 at Camp San Saba, he had lived in Del Rio 21 years. Survivor gr include wife Norma son Jay R. Appleton of Eagle Pass daughter Linda Grafagnino of San Antonio parents Mr. and Mrs Raymond Appleton of Camp San Saba brother Gene Appleton of Del Rio and two grandchildren.
Registration for 1977 plates runs February 1 through April 1 with non detachable stickers on 1975 metal plates. New stickers go on the upper right rear, 1976 stickers stay upper left. Motorists may order by mail February 1 to March 1 or visit local county tax offices.
