Poll tax receipts for McCulloch County total 2 264 by Wednesday with Jan 31 deadline. 1952 and 1954 totals were higher. Tax collector John Guice cites money shortage and notes 85 percent of the tax roll paid, below the usual 90 to 92 percent. Tuesday yields 410 poll tax payments and county taxes add 7 050.
The Roddie brothers plan to double capacity at Brady West Texas wool scouring plant. A second scouring train is installed. 60 workers will join a $4,000 weekly payroll. The operation runs 24 hours with three shifts, nearly every Sunday. The project, sourced from Philadelphia gear, boosts local industry and cuts freight by processing grease wool locally.
An icy northern storm forces Brady area schools to close Thursday with officials awaiting weather forecasts for Friday. State and city crews sprayed sand on bridges and steep grades before dawn to keep highways passable while sleet and snow added moisture and dropped temperatures to around 20 degrees. This marked Brady County's third snow of the winter.
E. L. Humphrey of Brady Drug received the first license plate as auto tags went on sale in Brady. The 1956 tags use yellow letters on black and are an inch longer. Mc Culloch County codes are CX for passenger cars 1M for commercial 5K for farm trucks. Deadline April 15 for new plates. farm affidavits must be notarized. Tax renditions for 1956 also taken during registration.
The county March of Dimes chairman Jamie Williamson reports funds may top last year, with a current total of 4316.79 and donations still coming in. The Mothers Month event added 287.31, while breakdowns include Special gifts 1526.00 and Dance Bingo 767.51.
Two autos were severely damaged in a collision at Elms and Eighth Streets around 4 45 p m Tuesday. Miss Laurie Barfoot a Brady High School English teacher driving a 1955 Chevrolet headed east on Eighth Street while Leon Taff 18 drove a 1950 Ford north on Elm. No injuries and the cars could not be driven away.
Brady Rotary and Lions were left without a dining venue after El Patio cafe at 706 South China St closed. Women of the First Methodist Church will feed the Rotarians at the church through February, while the Lions seek a new site after their ice storm meeting cancellation.
Visits by Mr and Mrs J R McCartney of Odessa to Rochelle relatives including Mr and Mrs W J McCartney and Mr and Mrs H E Price highlighted a weekend gathering with other relatives.
Jim Harkrider named a nine member centennial steering committee to plan McCulloch County s 100th birthday. From Brady were H D Winters Korky Steffens Charles Darley and three from Waldrip Voca Melvin and Rochelle. First meeting set for 7 p m Thursday at the Chamber of Commerce office.
Roddie Wool Scouring Company in Brady operates five washing bowls to clean grease wool. With a second train installed, the plant will scour 50 000 pounds of grease wool every 24 hours, moving wool through soda ash and soap washes to a large drying unit.
A full page describes steam dried wool processing with inspection for paint burrs and trash, then bales weighing about 500 pounds. By products include wool grease or lanolin, extracted from wash water by two centrifuges at high speeds, with about 60 percent of water reclaimed for reuse.
The Community Chest board says a television set was given to Joe Ogden in lieu of a $25 monthly salary after his long service. They credit his efforts with local success, note he declined pay, and explain the move to hire a secretary in his place while Ogden remains detached from Chamber of Commerce duties.
J D Jordan of Mason, newly named field representative for the Farm Bureau, will meet with McCulloch County Farm Bureau directors at 7 30 p m Saturday at the McCulloch County Electric Co op Building. It is the directors regular meeting night.
Miss Janet Rudder registered for the spring semester and was escorted home by roommate Miss June Forward. They plan to return to Austin Friday. Mrs. Rudder and her daughter visited Austin Tuesday with Sherron Smith, who stayed to resume studies at the university.
Four Bradyites attended the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday night. They viewed the Ford Motor Company produced color film High Road about U S Highway 87 from Canada to the Mexican border. Attendees included Joe T. Ogden H D Winters Wilson L D Jordan and J B Smith.
Brady National Guardsmen announce a nationwide one day recruiting drive on February 22, Washington's birthday. The Brady unit aims to sign up 75,000 volunteers with emphasis on parental guidance. Captain Narvel Rogers says enlistment offers training, pay, pension, and civilian skills. Prospects may visit the Brady Armory or call 2118 for details.
