Nation's Christmas Tree Sequoia Honored Since 1926 Shrine
A Kings Canyon Sequoia known as General Grant has become the Nation's Christmas Tree. Charles Lee and volunteers organized a Christmas service at its base beginning in 1925, with the Interior Department dedicating it in 1926. In 1956 a ceremony declared the tree a national shrine for fallen servicemembers. The tree stands 267 feet tall, older than 1500 years at Christ’s birth, and drew thousands to December services across states.
