The 198th District Court heard 13 indictments from the McCulloch County grand jury on Monday. Two cases were no-billed and four were passed for future consideration. Indicted for bookmaking in Jubliee fall meet bets on horse races were Willard Cletus Miller Jim R Welch and Rafael D Ward. Mrs Jean 8 Miller of Brady.
In McCulloch County 2,439 Social Security beneficiaries receive monthly benefits totaling 403 047 dollars at the start of 1977. Among them 1328 are retired workers 122 disabled workers 382 spouses of workers 363 dependents and 640 under 65 or 1799 65 or older. Men number 896 women 1299 and children 244. The Brady City Council approved a permanent 13.7 percent rate increase for Brady Municipal Gas Corp. new residential rate 2.35, commercial and industrial 2.25, effective immediately. The change follows a prior temporary rate and a 32.5 percent requested rise. City consultant Bill McMorries noted gas costs and taxes rose, urged regular council reports, and opposed automatic pass through charges.
Twenty two Bradyites joined the Cisco Junior College Band and Wrangler Belles on a Thanksgiving trip to New York. They attended Macy’s Day Parade rehearsals and a Radio City Music Hall show, toured the Empire State Building Liberty Statue St Patrick’s Cathedral and Chinatown, and stayed at the Waldorf Astoria. They traveled by bus to Dallas Fort Worth and flew to New York returning Saturday.
The Lohn basketball tournament begins Thursday with area teams in boys and girls divisions. Coach Randy Baker serves as event coordinator.
Sen. Lloyd Bentsen announced that the National Parks Service awarded a federal grant of 18 650 dollars to begin restoring the old McCulloch County Jail in Brady. The Heart of Texas Historical Museum will provide 20 850 dollars match for phase one, funding roofing masonry and windows, via the Texas Historical Commission in Austin.
