Mary Helen Bratton of Melvini was named queen by the McCulloch County Farm Bureau. The Bratton daughter, intro duced by Gerald Huffman, will represent the local bureau in the district contest in Llano in September. Debra Ann Huffman was crowned as the future queen by George Johanson after a pageant with 15 contestants.

Brady Bulldozers Begin Grid Workouts For 1961 Season

The Brady Bulldogs start workouts next Monday for the 1961 football season. First game expected against Ballinger on September 1 at home. Coaches K Y Owens Ed Whiteley Fletcher Fields and Tommy Starnes attended the Texas High School Coaches Association coaching school in San Antonio. Freshman coach Charles Brewster could not attend. Owens says the team is not big fast or strong but is picked favorites in District 18 AA.

Bird-Chaser Rex Lewis Solves Courthouse Bird Problem

Oklahoma Youth Undergoes Surgery After Injury

Patch Coleman a 16 year old from Eufaula Oklahoma, who lived with his sister Mrs Deryl Griffith in Fort Worth while working at Heart of Texas Commission Co, underwent surgery there Monday for a broken cheek bone. He will be hospitalized about a week. The injury occurred July 27 when unloading stock at the commission company stockyards and an unruly cow knocked him against a truck.

Street Lights On Whiteway Being Replaced

The City replaces incandescent lamps on Bridge and West Commerce Streets with mercury vapor lights. About 130 lamps on Highways 87 and 377 and around Brady square will be upgraded. New 400 watt fixtures use less power and emit a bluish green light. old lights will serve Brady residential areas.

Out of Hospital Ledbetter Faces New Sanity Hearing

Rollie White Ledbetter, once found insane in a 1958 murder case, returned to Travis County jail after Rusk State Hospital release. A new sanity hearing is planned, with possible retrial for murder of his wife. The case moved from Mason to Austin. a 1960 verdict found him insane at the time, enabling later trial if declared sane.

City Begins Buying Land For New Brady Lake Project

The Brady City Land Purchasing Committee initiates land acquisitions for the Brady Lake project with surveys completed on all tracts except the north dam area where Santa Fe Railroad surveys are ongoing. The committee, chaired by former Mayor P. L. Ulstad, meets landowners Friday afternoon in City Hall to review property needs, with 2,500 acres across 24 landowners affected.

Schools Being Put in Shape For Opening

A summer cleanup repair project for Brady school buildings nears completion. South Ward classrooms in grades three to five, rest rooms and halls repainted. Four rooms floors sanded and refinished. Combination storage shelves installed in eight rooms. High school halls and rooms repainted with new student furniture in two math rooms. Bulldog Stadium press box concession stand and ticket booths receive new paint.

Hearing on Brady Independent School District Budget

A public hearing will be held at 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 21 at City Hall on the Brady Independent School District budget for 1961 62 totaling 425 467 with estimated receipts of 426 000. The largest outlay is 283 719 for teachers salaries. Local tax sources are expected to provide 152 500 while state funds amount to 268 739.
