Tonight the Bowie Jackrabbits host Diamond Hill in a lively non-conference game on our field. Congressman-elect Frank Ikard of Wichita Falls will travel to Washington this week following his victory in the special election for Texas 13th District. Final tallies across 15 counties show Ikard with 8,931 votes, leading a field of seven opponents. ballots from Denton county were incomplete.
Thomas Ayres was elected president of the Bowie Jackrabbit Quarterback Club at its first season meeting in City Auditorium. Twenty seven members attended and officers named were Ayres president Henderson vice president and Gayle Bradley secretary. Ver dine Scott opened the meeting. A membership committee was appointed including Henderson Wayne Scroggin Scott and Emmett Thorne as plans to grow dues. A football highlights picture was shown and Coach Mattingly spoke on prospects as of now.
Showers and cooler weather eased drought conditions in the Bowie area this week. Rain refreshed some plowed fields for fall grain and legume planting, though cracked soil absorbed much of it. Stockwater appeared in a few places, with an inch in some spots. More showers and cooler days forecast.
The Rotary Club of Bowie Texas welcomes A D Cummings Governor of the 186th District Rotary International for his annual visit to Northwest Central Texas clubs. He meets with President R W Garrett and officials to discuss administration and service. Cummings is a Life Insurance agent in Olney and a Rotary member overseeing about 7 300 clubs with 350 000 members.
Thieves entered the C H Parker Super Market on Mason Street in Bowie and tried to move a heavy safe but only shifted it three feet. No fingerprints or safe access occurred, and $3 30 in loose change from a front cash register was the only loss. The entry came via a rear door, as manager Clarence Newsom noted.
Grass fires threatened Bowie on Thursday September 6 as the whole Fire Department was summoned to Harvey Richardson's place on the Stoneburg Highway. The blaze was controlled with no serious damage. On Friday September 7 a grass fire at E. W. Daley's home escaped control and could have damaged the garage apartment of Mrs. J A Brites unless city assistance intervened.
Bowie public schools opened to a record high enrollment of 1173 students led by 330 in the high school with about 40 in the senior class. Sixth graders and some fifth graders attend classes in the administration building at Pelham Fair Park until the new elementary building is completed, likely in December.
A robber held up employees at Continental State Bank in Boyd Wise County on Tuesday and escaped with 12000 in a blue 1948 Chevrolet. At press time Thursday the suspect had not been apprehended. W F Lancaster listed sick this week. Debe Dutton in Wichita Falls and Henrietta Wednesday.

Three unusual pictures are scheduled at the Ritz Theatre in Bowie per a large ad by owner Frank Benson. The first showing is Flying Leathernecks a technicolor film starring John Wayne Robert Ryan Don Taylor Jay C Flippen and others opening Saturday September 15 at 10 am.
Bowie residents previously using outdoor toilets are now installing modern fixtures and connecting to the new sewage system. Mayor David Major says 90 percent of the population can connect, with more lines coming on Adkins Central Avenue and Jones Street.
Mrs Don Biggerstaff returned to Fort Worth Thursday after a several days visit here.
Bowie faces Diamond Hill at Jackrabbit Field in the season debut. The Rabbits, drawing a heavier foe with Wesley McDonald at fullback, resume a 2 to 1 series edge but seek a district title in 2A-11 after realignment. Bowie schedules ten games with six at home.
The Band Mothers earned 345 dollars from 82 cakes at a Cake Walk Saturday night benefiting Bowie High School Band. Fred Bloom and Sam Lovette hosted the event with music and the group thanked the public and helpers for support.
