Bowie High School football players scrimmaged the Iowa Park Hawks August 31. The lighter Jack Rabbits plan to travel to Graham September 13 to face the Graham Steers before opening September 14 at home against the Diamond Hill Eagles of Fort Worth. Approximately 35 players trained with coaches Massey and Mattingly.
At a Wednesday morning meeting the Chamber of Commerce Merchants Committee discussed proposals including a visitor welcome service, Second Monday promotions, and Christmas town decorations. The group urged adopting a Welcome Service with one third funding from the Chamber and potential one third from both the Rotary and Lions clubs, estimated at about $10 per month per organization.
Extensive interior improvements at the First Church of Christ in Bowie include a lowered ceiling reworked baptistry and pulpit area refinished hardwood floors and enhanced foyer. The project cost about 3000 dollars with Price and Green carpenters in charge.
Extensive improvements were under way at the McGregory Hotel on West Wise Street this week. The work included a general paint job and other updates to the property.
A Chevrolet driven by Buddy Smith of Fort Worth burned at a Quality Service Station on East Wise last Friday while fueling. The fire, blamed on the exhaust, totaled the car. Earlier, a September 1 lumber fire at Johnson Poultry Ranch caused no damage, and a North Mason grass fire also caused no damage. Tuesday morning a grass blaze at Mrs. Henry Garlington’s Central Avenue residence endangered the home and barn but was controlled. A welding torch at Richardson Bros. Feed Store caused a Tuesday noon fire with minimal damage.
Dan Dimock and Tom Stewart were awarded Eagle Scout at a First Methodist Church ceremony on Sunday September 2. Fred Bloom and Rev. Floyd Boulware presented the honors. Dimock is son of Bert Dimock and senior patrol leader of Troop 116. Stewart is Scoutmaster of the Methodist Troop with long service in Scout work.
County authorities discuss a county wide 30 cent ad valorem tax for farm to market roads. A referendum will not be asked until county sentiment is clear and a spending plan is agreed. A Bowie delegation will seek broader county representation to meet with the Commissioner's Court. Estimated net after homestead exemptions is about 50 dollars per taxpayer.
A larger crowd than usual is expected in Bowie next Monday for the regular Second Monday Trades Day. The September Second Monday draws one of the year's biggest crowds as Bowie businesses display fall and winter stock and merchants offer varied programs for the day.

Frank Benson owner of the Bowie Maystic Ritz and Texan theatres supplies intermediate tickets to Bowie students cutting admissions costs. The plan takes effect once school opening registrations are completed.
The Bowie News reports eight candidates are vying for Congress. Election returns will be received by telephone from election judges and posted outside the News office after 7:00 p.m. Polls close at 7. The public is invited to view the bulletins.
A Bowie Chamber of Commerce survey with 564 returned postal cards shows 343 favor spraying at 50 cents per month for insect control versus 221 against. The garbage removal proposal at $1 per month received 214 in favor and 350 against, with spraying winning by 122 votes. Directors will forward results to the City Council for use in policy decisions.
Construction continues on two Bowie School buildings by contractor J D Owens. Fifty three men worked last week focusing on the elementary building with delays from steel window arrivals. Brick work advances on both the gym and elementary building with the gym at 9,500 square feet and both projects expected to finish in December.
Co. V. Young hardware on Lindsey Street at the Trades Day corner announces a factory man will be at his place Monday September 10 to give free demonstrations of the Red Jacket Hi-Sped water well pumps. The new line is said to operate on a novel principal and to be economical.
W H Wright chair[man] of the North Texas District of the Oil Industry Information Committee says local chairmen across twelve counties are planning to publicize Oil Progress Week October 14 to 20. Oil firms and allied industries support local papers in creating sections highlighting the oil industry in a free enterprise system during the observance. Wright urges service stations bulk agents producing firms and all oil sector participants to work with Dean W Robbins the district committee's local representative to promote Oil Progress Week.
Dan Hugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Brinkley, posed on his third birthday anniversary. Donnie, as he is called, is an avid football fan and discusses the sport with surprisingly adult insight. He is the only son of Brink's Shoe Store owners and already learns about shoes and new styles.
Highway Patrolman Moore reports an arrest for driving while drunk after a man’s car collided with a soldier’s vehicle two miles north of Stoneburg Tuesday night. The suspect faces charges of intoxicated driving.
In Montague county voters will cast ballots Saturday September 8 in a special election to fill the 13th Congressional District seat after Ed Gossett’s resignation. Eight candidates appear on the ticket including Ikard Stephens Jackson Wayne Wangoseller Jenkins Crouch Wilmans McFarlane. Voters may scratch out seven names and vote for their chosen candidate.
An-Son locates Barlow No 1 southeast of M R Barlow land on the Bowie Wichita Falls road. Ward McCullough perforates Eagle No 1 Fenoglio a mile northeast of Montague and tests eight barrels per hour. Continental reports strong 24 hour test from George Rucker No 1 with 420 barrels oil and 475 gas oil ratio. Fry No 6 and R L Brown wildcat drillings continue near Hildreth and Jack county. Texas Company sets pipe at Hicks wildcat near Newport with lime production prospects.
J A Hogueland manager of Stout-Chapman Motor Company announces the service station is back in operation. Experienced mechanics and a well equipped department will service all makes of cars and trucks. The firm also has a parts department and is an agency for De Soto and Plymouth.
Mr and Mrs Jones Henry and Rod Boyd spent Labor Day weekend in Del Rio and witnessed a bull fight in Baja California Mexico at Billa cuna.
