City authorities warn against swimming in Lake Bowie. Mayor Paire states the ordinance will be enforced equally with a $5 fine and costs for first offense. Official notice signed by the Mayor appears in this issue, with lake property posted and enforcement planned.
Dr E W Wright retires as chairman of the State Board of Health after long service beginning with Gov. Moody's 1927 appointment. His six year terms spanned 1935 1938 and again under Gov Allred he was reappointed for six years to 1943. He plans to continue advising the board.
Miss Kathleen Neal of Corsicana married Dr Robert L L Marshall of Bowie at First Methodist Church Corsicana. The couple will reside in Bowie after a South Texas honeymoon. the bride taught at Texas Wesleyan College and Odd Fellows Home, while the groom trained at University of Texas Medical Department and served in Fort Worth.
Boy Scouts of Troop 91 with Scoutmaster Henry Moore and assistants head to Blue Hole camp three miles northwest of Chico. Lion's Club portable equipment funded the trip. Carl Hatcher to supervise cooking. Patrol leaders include Kenneth Reddy Selwyn Willis Richard Ervin and John Dixon with many others joining the camping party. George Cline to join later.
The Lions Club met Thursday evening at Blue Hole Camp three miles northeast of Chico with Boy Scouts. War assistance committee members were Albert Bacelier Fred Fehsenfeld and F J Dixon. Lions departed Griffin's Drug Store at 5 pm after swimming and shared an evening meal with the scouts.
The Denton District of the Methodist missionary societies will hold an all day zone meeting in Nocona Friday June 23. District Secretary Mrs Wherry will preside and many Indies of the Methodist Church expect to attend.
The Rotary Club schedules a barbecue at Sinelatr Park Wednesday evening at six o'clock. Aimed at members and guests, the gathering will feature informal dining and community fellowship.
The Tri County Medical Society of Clay Montague and Wise counties held a Thursday barbecue at Baccus picnic grounds with about 40 attendees. Guests included doctors Glover Hall Gothard and others from Fort Worth Dallas and Wichita Falls with Dr FE Wright as arrangements chairman.
The Men's Bible Class of First Baptist Church will hold a barbecue Friday evening June 25 at Judge J W Chancellor’s farm in S oelock. Coffield leads the program planning and class members are urged to attend.
Frieda Thomas Bryan writes from Charleston about visits beyond Elkview Cabin Creek and a coal region. She notes oil derricks on mountains, coal loading platforms called tipples, springs, and a $10 000 000 capitol dome with $70 000 gold leaf. She mentions floods affecting Huntington and plans to return June 27.
Raymond C Morrison is billed to lecture at the City Auditorium on Monday night as part of a Bowie women’s auxiliary conference. The program features devotional periods, sermons, and a series of conferences led by Mrs. J C Young Mrs. Susie Dalton and others with musical interludes and a picnic lunch. Evening service concludes with a devotional by Miss Margaret Painter and an address by Miss Virginia Ely of Fort Worth with attendees from Bowie Auxiliaries staying overnight.
Miss Helen Gardner leads the B T U revival June 27 to July 3 at First Baptist Church. She is T Gardner’s sister and will teach senior and adult books. Verna Lee Carson of Fort Worth and a Baylor graduate will teach the intermediate book. A storytelling hour will serve Beginners and Primaries with a class and teacher for every family member.
Rev BH G Ryan pastor of Wesley Methodist Church Greenville Texas will preach in a Methodist revival series beginning Sunday July 11 Moody Cunningham noted song leader and Christian worker will direct song services and youth activities Dr Ryan and Cunningham have led many successful revivals together
Edgar Underwood 34 died Sunday when a 22 rifle bullet entered his mouth and exited his neck at his parents home. An inquest returned death by own action. He lived in Harrold eleven years, worked for Lone Star Gas as a wineman, and leaves a wife, three children, parents, four brothers, and three sisters. Funeral held in Harrold with burial in Vernon Cemetery.
Patricia Kay Kennedy eight months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kennedy, died Friday afternoon after illness. Survivors include her parents and grandparents. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie. Funeral directors J. A. Burgess handled arrangements.
Benches on the church lawn are being repaired and painted this week for open air services. Evening services will be held on the lawn throughout the summer months. Everyone is cordially invited to attend all services.
Mr and Mrs C H Kilpatrick and children Leslie and Gene traveled to Burkburnett with her mother Mrs Lela King and spent the weekend at Crystal Falls Local travel notes mention the family visit and shared time at the resort community.
Leon Staples and his wife visited Wilson Oklahoma on Monday night to see his parents Mr and Mrs B Staples.
Fort Worth City Forester Raymond C Morrison will speak on Our Community at an open Bowie Garden Club meeting held at the City Auditorium. The free lecture, illustrated with colored slides, is sponsored by the Bowie Garden Club with Chamber of Commerce cooperation.
A softball league will be organized this week with play beginning next week. The Fire Department already has a team ready and invites others to enter. The Major City League will form from the first four teams to file player lists with Leslie Speir at the fire station by noon Monday.
The Lions Club will install newly elected officers at a Ladies Night program on July 1. District Governor-elect Tom Gillis of Fort Worth is invited to perform the installation. Retiring officers include Temple Yarbrough and M. A. Bryan among others. banquet venue not yet decided.
The derrick at the Montague County Oil Company well on the J. A. Brite ranch four miles west of Bowie has skidded feet east and is prepared for testing. W. & L. Drilling of Wichita Falls will drill a test, moving rig from Knox County and expected to arrive.
