Attendees at the 71st Texas Press Association convention in Fort Worth numbered about 450 over three days of sessions. Speakers urged a national spiritual awakening and praised the press, with Governor Shivers stressing informed citizenry and press freedom.
First Baptist Church of Bowie hosts a one week Youth Revival starting Sunday June 25 with preachers Gordon D. Dorian and Dick Wentworth. Music led by Frank Boggs from Baylor University will lift spirits as Rev. G B Bradshaw directs the event with daily 10 am and 8 pm services including lawn services in the evenings. Wentworth is a Baylor graduate and former Army member. Dorian hails from New Orleans and is a Southwestern Baptist Seminary student with past pastorate in Knoxville Tennessee.
Johnson Poultry Ranch completes a 30 by 100 foot laying house with concrete floors modern lighting indirect heating and automatic air conditioning. It houses hundreds of Johnson's Leghorn hens for laying records and stock selection. Built by C. H. Craft Construction Company.
Bob White Motor Company at 410 West Wise Street in Bowie is named the new U S Tire dealer. The U S Line offers tires for cars trucks tractors and farm implements with air ride tires boasting safety mileage durability curb protection and stronger stopping power in the U S Royal Masters.
Charming girls from the Bowie High Homemakers class under Miss Sands enjoyed a group outing at Quanah Parker Lake in Oklahoma last week. The scene includes Betty Jean Litsey June Hancock Betsy Conner Patty Sue Harris and Jean Hancock.
A complete Fourth of July program in Pelham Park is planned by Lions Club American Legion and auxiliaries VFW and its auxiliary. A downtown parade from City Auditorium opens at 10 A.M. with bands horses and entrants. Activities run from 11 to 7 including rallies shows games and fireworks ending with square dancing.
The Bowie Youth Council planning committee and three full time directors outline a expanded six week summer recreation program. Art classes at the city auditorium run daily with Adrian Hill directing and M L Massey leading high school group games. Girls aged 7 to 15 will join Mary Latham for morning activities, with plans for picnics trips and sports at Lake Bridgeport Bowie H S Trout Ranch Foster Ranch and other outdoor spots. Adults and high school students may join Tuesday night art and ceramics classes in the basement of the city auditorium.
Dillard and Waldermaine announce a new producer 14 miles northwest of Park Springs and five miles southwest of Fruitland. John Hibdon owns adjoining 200 acre tract east of the site and an offset is due to be drilled soon. Bluff Creek reports City of Montague No 1 with 17 feet of saturated strawn sand and 42 gravity oil, 5798 feet depth, oil rising when test closed due to caving.
At its Monday meeting the Chamber of Commerce urged a town wide clean up of owned or leased properties and all alleys and vacant lots. Committees seek extra funds for thorough spraying in residential and business districts and to cover expenses for the August 3 Grape Festival staging.
A replica Independence Bell will visit Bowie on Wednesday June 28 at 1 30 p m as part of a U S Savings Bonds promotion. E L Covey Montague County chairman directs the tour with Paddy Widlake as master of ceremonies H S Trout Bowie News publisher to give brief remarks. The bell arrives by Ford truck at 1 30 and departs at 3 escorted by Sheriff Jameson with a ceremony to follow.
Elvina Winton and Iris Nan Cozart, aged 9 and 8, were photographed while shopping in Bowie. The Bowie News notes their poised appearance and suggests they may become citizens and homemakers of tomorrow.
The Montague Farmers Co-Op annual meeting on June 19 voted to expand the board to 10 directors with Homer Jackson and Herman Husfeld elected. Existing directors include Joe Threadgill Louis McGhee Bobby Southland P. D. Kennedy and W. E. Bowen. Dividend checks totaling 1126 were issued to 97 stockholders as the 1948 patronage refund. 1949 sales were reported at 302000.
Decatur golf men will travel to Bowie to play in a Sunday match. A large turnout is expected and strong interest is anticipated.
Members of the Bowie Masonic Lodge and their wives will attend a barbecue feed at Pelham Park this Friday evening. Rev. Charles Tucker of First Presbyterian Church will give an address, and the annual social event is expected to foster fellowship among attendees.
Woody Campbell, manager of the Trail Drive-In Theatre, thanks patrons for the fine patronage at the opening of The Trail and says further work will make the venue more attractive and convenient.
Claude H Thompson of Belton has accepted a unanimous Bowie Board of Education offer to lead Bowie schools with a three year contract. He is 46, married with two children, and holds degrees from Baylor and UT. Thompson previously led Belton schools and now plans to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy while moving to Bowie.
Albert Ritchey of Chico in Powie Wednesday to deposit money from a cattle sale he made. He reported growth on range grown calves and noted a six month old calf weighing 660 pounds sold for 28 cents per pound, totaling 184.80 dollars after buying the cow and calf for 200 last winter.
