Miss Peggie Spearman of Midlothian was honored at a miscellaneous shower Saturday at a friend's home. Several Bowie friends sent gifts. She is the bride elect of Raymond Western, with the wedding set for June 28.
Minor applicants ages 14 to 16 may apply for operator licenses via the School Tax Assessor and Collectors Office in the city auditorium basement. Forms are approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety and filed in Austin for final approval. Examinations are held the first, third and fifth Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with R B Johnston. prepare for written tests by 9 a.m. and driving tests at 1 p.m. Johnston will not be in Bowie June 21. next trip is July 5. Major and Mrs Knight and others were noted in Bowie travel and local visits to Wichita Falls.
Saint Jo gains new superintendent Jack Vereen to assume July 1 duties. The county board reports 141 transfers after canceling 10 protested by Capps Corner. A land transfer petition from Forestburg ISD to Saint Jo ISD is set for August 10 hearing led by Wayne Thompson.
Montague county sheriff Tom Lindsey and county attorney Marvin London report that $3,054.84 has been collected from hot check offenders and paid to merchants since January. Form letters are sent with 10 days to make payment on the hot checks.
A notice notes that some offenders were filed on and some paid fines. Collections occurred in the country and across the state with some activity outside Texas.
Texas Game and Fish Magazine highlights Bowie and Montague County’s Amon G. Carter Lake built on Big Sandy Creek. The article notes water rights granted August 19, 1954 and May 1 dedication, plus 20 000 bass stocked in 1956 and a $960 000 investment behind a modern purification plant.
