Bowie Canning Plant Opens to Start Canning

The Bowie canning plant opened Thursday morning June 8 under Grace Narramore as project supervisor with canning for fruits and vegetables planned to begin June 12. The facility serves Montague Clay Wichita and Archer counties and operates under W P A history with a 40 60 distribution to customers and relief agencies.

Scouts From Montague and Bowie Head to Camp Boulder

Eleven Boy Scouts under Orville Haralson of Montague depart Monday for Camp Boulder in the Wichita Mountains west of Lawton for a week of camping and merit badge work. Dreyfuss Learns of Fathers Death in Germany

Harry Dreyfuss received word Saturday that his father Herman Dreyfuss died suddenly of a heart attack in Mannheim Germany. A Trans Atlantic telephone call to his mother confirmed funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.

Monuments to Be Placed At Park

Plaques honoring Montague county boys who died in World War I are removed from the Mason street flag pole and relocated to Pelham Camp Park. They will form the back of a circular bench near the park entrance with surrounding flowers and shrubs. The project is under Speake-Meyer Post of the American Legion and near the Pelham Camp Veterans monument once in front of the National Hotel.

Rain Attains Measurable Amount in Bowie Monday

Gauge at the First National Bank recorded one and three quarter inches of rain before noon Monday in Bowie while surrounding communities saw only light showers. The rain boosted corn crop prospects and farmers expect two more rains by July 4 to ensure a bumper harvest of corn watermelons and other crops. Grains were partially filled and stock water supplies secured for weeks.

M C White a Newport resident for 22 years died at his daughter's home, Mrs O L Pickett. Services were held Thursday at 5 pm at Newport Methodist Church with Burgess Funeral Home directing. Claud Giles Home Damaged By Fire

A house owned by Mr and Mrs Claud Giles in the south part of town was damaged by a fire about 9 30 Tuesday morning. The blaze started in the roof and was quickly controlled by the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department.

School Campus Beautification Upgrades Underway

Work began last week to beautify the high school campus with plowing harrowing and leveling in preparation for sod. Plans are in progress for extensive landscaping at the high school and the three wards.

Mrs Will Young Pursues Masters Degree at Texas Tech

Early Wheeler Peaches Head South Despite Weather

Montague county farmers expect the best fruit crop in six years with Elbert Russell of Bowie shipping Early Wheeler peaches at about 15,000 bushels and Elberta peaches at double that, despite a late freeze and hail. He began shipments Monday to South Texas, mainly Houston, moving 300 to 500 bushels daily, with large, fine fruit bringing good prices.

The Southwest Montague County Singing Convention will hold its quarterly meeting Sunday June 25 at Pleasant Ridge with George Brashear presiding. Presbyterian Vacation Bible School Closes

The First Presbyterian church closed its Daily Vacation Bible School on Friday at 7 45 pm in the church basement. Seventy six pupils enrolled with groups led by Mrs W A Peterson Mrs Frank Huslead Mrs S W Heard Mrs W C Stagg Mrs W W Wright Mrs Geo Slaughter Mrs Paul Donald and others. Reverend M S Peek Transitions to Bowie Ministry

Rev M S Peek, longtime Oklahoma pastor, moves his home to Bowie this week. He will reside at the E A Boyd residence on Tarrant street after seventeen years in evangelism and pastorship including Cement Byron Helena Broken Bow Stroud Mountain View Fairfax and Perry where he helped reopen six churches and led a fifth Sunday convention. He earned BA 1928 and MA 1929 from Phillips University and is pursuing a divinity degree at TCU. Mrs Peek and two children stay in Oklahoma with relatives for now.

Bellevue Welcomes Good Will Tour

A large Bellevue crowd welcomed the Goodwill Tours caravan at Bellevue High School on Friday night. Mayor N B Gaines extended the greeting as Sam Lovette acted as master of ceremonies and led the program with the Bowie Lions Club and Montague County Fair Board. The Bellevue High School Band, under Geo Rucker, performed a varied concert with vocal numbers by M Posey and others and a Buck and Wing dance.
