The Bowie canning plant opened Thursday morning June 8 under Grace Narramore as project supervisor with canning for fruits and vegetables planned to begin June 12. The facility serves Montague Clay Wichita and Archer counties and operates under W P A history with a 40 60 distribution to customers and relief agencies.
Eleven Boy Scouts under Orville Haralson of Montague depart Monday for Camp Boulder in the Wichita Mountains west of Lawton for a week of camping and merit badge work. The travelers include John Yarbrough David Gregory Leon Randell Orel J Roberts Joseph Wiese Tip Jimerson Jr Paul Donald Hubert Vassar Bert Cassles Self Jr Paul Martin from Troops 91 116 and 98.
Harry Dreyfuss received word Saturday that his father Herman Dreyfuss died suddenly of a heart attack in Mannheim Germany. A Trans Atlantic telephone call to his mother confirmed funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.
R S McDonald of Newport will preach Sunday at 11 00 AM at the Church of Christ. A cordial invitation is extended to the public to attend and worship with the members.
Plaques honoring Montague county boys who died in World War I are removed from the Mason street flag pole and relocated to Pelham Camp Park. They will form the back of a circular bench near the park entrance with surrounding flowers and shrubs. The project is under Speake-Meyer Post of the American Legion and near the Pelham Camp Veterans monument once in front of the National Hotel.
Gauge at the First National Bank recorded one and three quarter inches of rain before noon Monday in Bowie while surrounding communities saw only light showers. The rain boosted corn crop prospects and farmers expect two more rains by July 4 to ensure a bumper harvest of corn watermelons and other crops. Grains were partially filled and stock water supplies secured for weeks.
M C White a Newport resident for 22 years died at his daughter's home, Mrs O L Pickett. Services were held Thursday at 5 pm at Newport Methodist Church with Burgess Funeral Home directing. Survived by three sons A C White Bowie Elvin White Hedley Texas Deward White Newport. two daughters Mrs F E Cordell Newport and Mrs Pickett Newport. three brothers Hugh White Bluegrove Geo White Postoak Edd White Iowa Park. and one sister Miss Mattie White Newport.
Mrs Dennis Murphy and her young son Robert return to their Midland Texas home after a two week visit with Mr and Mrs Robert Murphy. Mr Murphy has lived in Midland for twelve weeks working in a printing shop.

The Bowie Dodgers host the Bluegrove ball club next Sunday at 3 PM in Pelham Ark. Bowie seeks a fourth straight win after beating Selma last Sunday when Marlow Oklahoma could not travel.
A house owned by Mr and Mrs Claud Giles in the south part of town was damaged by a fire about 9 30 Tuesday morning. The blaze started in the roof and was quickly controlled by the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department.
Work began last week to beautify the high school campus with plowing harrowing and leveling in preparation for sod. Plans are in progress for extensive landscaping at the high school and the three wards.
Miss Inez Rudy former president of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs returns home Tuesday June 6 from Baltimore where she attended the National Music Convention. She visited New York the World's Fair and on the way back stopped at Riley's birthplace near Greenfield Indiana and bought a new Buick from Whitman Agency in Flint Michigan.
Mrs. Will Young left Sunday for Lubbock to attend classes at Texas Technological College. She will complete her Masters degree work during the summer. Mrs. Young has taught at Stoneburg school in recent years and previously taught at East Ward school in Bowie.
Montague county farmers expect the best fruit crop in six years with Elbert Russell of Bowie shipping Early Wheeler peaches at about 15,000 bushels and Elberta peaches at double that, despite a late freeze and hail. He began shipments Monday to South Texas, mainly Houston, moving 300 to 500 bushels daily, with large, fine fruit bringing good prices.
The Southwest Montague County Singing Convention will hold its quarterly meeting Sunday June 25 at Pleasant Ridge with George Brashear presiding. A committee led program by G Jackson Barney Whitehead and Ike Parks aims to entertain. The event draws broad crowds from nearby areas and beyond the state and noon lunch will be provided on the grounds. The public is invited to attend with carried lunch baskets.
The Legion Post 252 will present Alls Quiet on the Western Front at the Ritz Theatre on Friday and Saturday nights June 16 and 17. Lew Ayres leads the cast with Slim Summerville, and proceeds benefit child welfare.
Miss Inez Rudy, a renowned piano and voice teacher, announces a special summer course of private and class instruction starting Thursday June 8. She is the immediate past president of the Texas Federation of Music Clubs and currently holds an office in the national organization.
Mr and Mrs Fred Kiser announce the arrival of a seven and a half pound son born Sunday June 4 at their home. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs J H Hankins of Bowie and the mother is remembered as Miss Athalee Hankins.
Mr and Mrs C D Perona and children attended church in Montague on Sunday. Dana Sue Benson returned home to spend summer with her parents after a freshman term at TSCW. Clifton Varnon of Austin visited Bowie Sunday night en route to Austin after visiting his mother in Clovis New Mexico. Mr and Mrs E L Kersey and Mr and Mrs W D Smith visited in Nocona Sunday. Mrs C W Wylie and family from Denver were guests of Mrs Wylie’s sister and Boone Wilson.
Stewart Watson, a first year Texas University law student, visits his parents Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Watson in Wichita Falls on Wednesday. He will work this summer in Ft. Worth in District Attorney Marvin Brown Jr’s office and plans to reenter the university next fall.
The Rev. M. S. Peek moved to Bowie this week to establish his home and continues his duties as pastor of the First Christian church since April.
Two Vacation Bible schools run this week starting Monday June 5 at the First Methodist and First Baptist churches report large enrollments. Classes cover Bible lessons hand work and story telling with supervised secretarial periods enhancing student enjoyment. Nurses and teachers listed include Mrs Barney Huth as Baptist principal and a long teaching staff at both churches. Both schools continue through next week.
The First Presbyterian church closed its Daily Vacation Bible School on Friday at 7 45 pm in the church basement. Seventy six pupils enrolled with groups led by Mrs W A Peterson Mrs Frank Huslead Mrs S W Heard Mrs W C Stagg Mrs W W Wright Mrs Geo Slaughter Mrs Paul Donald and others. Students presented resumes of their studies including Our Happy World Bible Homes Our Church and prayers and character training followed by a social hour and refreshments prepared by the intermediates.
Miss Lucille Jackson daughter of Mr and Mrs G Jackson has been elected by Prairie Point trustees to teach Home Economics for 1939 40 She previously taught in Leona for two years teaching Home Economics and grades three and four She will receive a Bachelor of Science degree from NTS T C Denton after the summer.
Rev M S Peek, longtime Oklahoma pastor, moves his home to Bowie this week. He will reside at the E A Boyd residence on Tarrant street after seventeen years in evangelism and pastorship including Cement Byron Helena Broken Bow Stroud Mountain View Fairfax and Perry where he helped reopen six churches and led a fifth Sunday convention. He earned BA 1928 and MA 1929 from Phillips University and is pursuing a divinity degree at TCU. Mrs Peek and two children stay in Oklahoma with relatives for now.
All but one Bowie Rotary members attended the Wednesday lunch at Morrow Grill. Speaker T. B. Coffield gave an instructive address introduced by program chairman Frank Moss. New member J. H. Westbrook spoke as pastor of First Methodist and gave the invocation.
Jimerson Appliance Co. is now the authorized General Electric dealer in Bowie and surrounding trade area. Mr. Jimerson invites friends to visit his new place at 7 Tarrant Street for major appliances and prompt service.
The office of Dr S G Norris on Tarrant Street is being remodeled this week with repainting outside and new petitions inside. The interior has been rearranged with new furniture varnished and cushions added to harmonize with the updated look. J M Stewart is handling the work.
Mr and Mrs Will Kraner will be guests of the management to see Humphrey Bogart and Kay Francis in King of the Underworld at the Ritz Theatre, showing through Saturday. Bring this issue of The News.

A large Bellevue crowd welcomed the Goodwill Tours caravan at Bellevue High School on Friday night. Mayor N B Gaines extended the greeting as Sam Lovette acted as master of ceremonies and led the program with the Bowie Lions Club and Montague County Fair Board. The Bellevue High School Band, under Geo Rucker, performed a varied concert with vocal numbers by M Posey and others and a Buck and Wing dance.
Dr. E. W. Wright of the Bowie Clinic addressed a joint Wichita Falls gathering of the Northwest Texas Public Health Association and the Wichita County Medical Society on Tuesday evening. He spoke on The Relationship of Public Health to Organized Medicine. Mr. and Mrs. Lennon Hill of Foreston are visiting Mrs. Hill's parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Watson, for the summer.
The Ritz shows Humphrey Bogart and Kay Francis in King of the Underworld through Saturday with Serjeant Madden as a pre show and Hum hens in Midnight. Majestic features William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy in Silver on the Sage Friday and Saturday and Clark Gable with Charles Laughton in Mutiny on the Bounty Sunday and second Monday along with Nevada Cyclone.
