State Health Department Endorses Widespread Polio Vaccine Use
Texas health commissioner Dr. Henry A. Holle says the Salk polio vaccine markedly lowers paralysis risk. In 1956 only 4 paralytic cases occurred among 477000 vaccinated five to nine year olds, while 143 cases occurred among 375000 unvaccinated. The vaccinated group shows 2.7 per 100000 versus 16 per 100000 in the unvaccinated, a sixfold difference. The vaccine reduces death and crippling though it does not fully prevent polio.
