The six year old Larry Miller, son of Mr and Mrs C B D Miller, in Bowie, was suspected to have polio but doctors at Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth ruled out the disease.
Fishermen assist E. W. Bonn of the State Game and Fish Commission in removing fish from Bowie lake today. Local volunteers gather to help and the public is invited to attend. The fish will be edible and the chemical used is unspecified.
Bowie opens its miniature golf course for the summer with Stanley Arrington in charge. The course sits on North Mill Street near the swimming pool.
Builders report multiple residences under construction in Bowie and surroundings. Homes by Danny Deaver and Wilton Alsup rise in Harris and Cooper streets, Jefferson Street, and Stoneburg highway areas. Allen Hardware fixes wind damage while Odell Deweber remodels Newport home and LeRoy Williamson plans to move into a Walnut Street house next week.
The Bowie Church of Christ Vacation Bible and Singing School reaches 197 enrollments on its third day. Director Willis G. Jernigan expects more signups before closing Saturday. Eugene Gilmore of Tulsa is music director and heads the high school department. A closing general singing is set for Sunday June 5 at 2 30 p.m. with several area singers expected.
Mr and Mrs I B Wagonseller and children Roulene and Rebecca Ann left Thursday for Austin to visit State Senator Wayne Wagonseller. They plan to return via East Texas to buy tomatoes for resale at their Fort Worth highway fruit stand.
Mrs. T. P. Evans and Mrs. Paul Donald spent last Friday in Ft Worth for a day of visit and shopping, returning with reports of pleasant weather and varied activities in the city.
At 10 o'clock this morning the chemical was spread over the lake and fish were expected to surface after hours. Officials note catfish may take up to 12 hours to reach the surface while water depth and species affect timing. Several hundred people gathered early to watch and wait for fish.
Local fishermen funded the chemical treatment of the lake to curb an algal bloom. Mr Bonn warns surface fish are safe to eat but will not remain good after today and urges collectors to bring all fish to a weighing station for counting before disposal of the remainder.
Claude Thompson the school superintendent is recovering after surgery and may receive visitors briefly. L. W. Barber, who broke a neck bone in a tire incident, is recuperating. Bill Henson, who had surgery, shows improvement at Bowie hospital. Daisy Brashear suffered a heart attack and remains in Bowie hospital.
Billy Ray Hoyle is transferred to this area as a state game warden and will have headquarters in Bowie. He comes from Georgetown after completing the Ninth Game Warden School at Texas A&M College, a program run jointly by the Game and Fish Commission and A&M. Montague County joins other counties under the commission's supervision.
Bowie prepares to advertise for bids on the lake dam and pipeline with the Freese and Nichols firm of Fort Worth leading design. Work on the dam and pipe line expected to start within sixty days, bids opening around July 10, and contractor to begin within 30 days after award. Purification plant contract to follow. land acquisitions and a condemnation suit against the Green heirs are ongoing.
Richard Hoeldtke gains full ownership of the Ferndale Milk Co by purchasing it from the Hoeldtke estate. Fred Hoeldtke leases the Sinclair Station at Wise and Cummins Streets and plans to open in about six weeks. Both brothers led the plant since 1920 and 1949 respectively and hold local civic memberships in Bowie.
Montague jurors were selected for the June term to begin Monday June 6. Cases heard include C R Transport vs M Richardson with a $2300 verdict and Albert H Godwin winning $5500 against Texas Employer's Insurance Assn in a compensation suit. Multiple out of court settlements were announced including $4000 in Fletcher vs Consolidated Casualty and $4800 in Millburn vs Superior Insurance. The State of Texas dismissed two cases and several settlements were noted.
County Attorney Glen Sutherland reports Herbert Farres Weems and Elmer Victor Barron pled guilty to Driving While Intoxicated. Judges fined each $50 plus court costs, sentenced 3 days in jail, and suspended licenses for 6 months. Both had first offenses with no aggravating factors. Statewide Memorial Day weekend traffic deaths totaled 346, none in Montague County.
Richard and Ann Carrigan visited Amarillo last week with relatives and friends, sharing time with local residents and catching up with extended family.
The summer baseball program begins with a 6 30 practice game tonight at the high school diamond. Sponsors include Wichita Construction Co for the Bulldogs with John Heltzel as manager and coach E F Bradfield. First National Bank backs the Coyotes with Bert Harridge and Shorty Dorman as managers. Rotary Club Cardinals led by Hancel Coplin with Paul Fincher. Texaco Tigers sponsored by Joe Hamner led by Luke Anthony and Jack Hall. Heard's Hardware and Cady's Men Store back Pony League. coaches listed include Paul Fincher J P Floyd J C Williams Red Thompkins Beetle Canwell L V Demoss Bobby Brashear. Junior Little League is being organized. games start at 5 pm followed by Little League and Pony League games. Tonight two games: Bulldogs vs Cardinals and Tigers vs Coyotes. Regular play begins Monday June 6 with Tigers vs Cardinals and Lions vs Bears in Pony League, Tuesday June 7 Bulldogs vs Coyotes and Owls vs Eagles.
Dr and Mrs B H Roberts left this morning for College Station where the doctor will attend a veterinary conference. They will visit in Freeport before returning home.
The First Baptist church will host Vacation Bible School from June 6 to June 15 with a preparation day on June 3. Sessions run 8 30 to 11 30 a m daily for children ages 3 to 16 and both boys and girls are invited to attend.
Wayne Bechtelheimer of Canoga Park California shared world trip highlights with Rotarians last week. Mr and Mrs Bechtelheimer stayed with Mr and Mrs Errol Eggleston. A lumber cutting and manufacturing film was shown for this week’s program led by Nathan Gary with guests Nancy Orton Boyd Barjenbruch and John Tucker Jr.
Vacation Bible School started Monday at First Presbyterian Church with 34 enrolled and 11 helpers. Children range from 4 to 14 years old. Morning activities include Bible study crafts games and refreshments. The program continues through June 10.
The Bowie fire department responded around 2 pm Tuesday to a garage fire at Mrs. A. W. Chandler's residence. The structure housed storage and contents and was a total loss. fire started from burning trash.
Coach E C Lemons announces an organizational meeting Tuesday morning June 7 at the gym to plan gym classes for boys and girls. If enough interest exists, sessions in basketball and volleyball will run two or three mornings a week from 8 to 10.
Summer school is in progress at the high school. About thirty students are enrolled for make up work and for advanced study to graduate in three years.
The Bowie Bantam club will sponsor a lawn show at Pelham Park between 10 a m and p m Sunday. Cecil Hickey reports no prizes or entry fee but many breeders from Fort Worth Dallas and surrounding towns are expected to bring bantams. Attendees are invited to bring a basket lunch and join a picnic.
Bowie's garment factory will open Monday with a small workforce. Mrs. Richard Werner announces ongoing applications for women to work, noting a short supply of trained applicants but plans to train new hires as production begins.
Camp Fire girls and Boy Scouts sold 170 dollars worth of red poppies in Bowie on Saturday. The sum was slightly under last year but the response was good, according to Mrs. Arthur Hawkins, American Legion auxiliary president.
Daily Vacation Bible School begins June 6 at Nazarene Church and runs through June 17, Monday through Friday. All boys and girls ages 5 to 15 are welcome to attend. Sessions run 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Bowie Masonic Lodge No 578 will elect new officers at 8 p m Tuesday June 7 at the Masonic Hall Secretary Ernest Chandler announces All members and visiting Master Masons are urged to attend.
Mrs Earl Sansom resumed duties as Chamber of Commerce secretary on Monday following a vacation that took her and her daughter and family from Doniphan Missouri through Illinois Kentucky Tennessee Georgia Alabama Mississippi and Arkansas. She reports heavy rain and found Kentucky and Tennessee particularly beautiful.
Fort Worth Cats host a Little League Night next Wednesday drawing 120 Bowie players and about 1000 area youths in uniform. A planned program includes races contests and a parade with many players and parents attending.
Mrs. George Rucker is elected president of the 1956 Bowie High School travel club senior mothers group. Mrs. Clyde Trout becomes vice-president with Mrs. Grady Howie as secretary treasurer. Co-chairs of bake sales are Mrs. S. T. Hoffmen and Mrs. Travis Gilliland.
W. F. Barker, longtime Bowie junior high instructor, has accepted the principal post at Lone Star school. The Barker family will move from Fruitland to Lone Star for the term. Mrs. Vida Lewis replaces Mrs. Jim Frazier, who recently resigned.
