Dr Donnelly Becomes Commander at Dallas Naval Base
Dr W J Donnelly a Bowie Clinic and Bowie Hospital affiliate and former Naval Reserve lieutenant commander has been called to active duty and reports for duty Tuesday July 1. He is named Commanding Officer of the U S Naval Base in Dallas. His wife and two daughters will join him in Dallas. the family has been active in Bowie civic life and many friends wish them well.

Grape Festival July 29 Near Bowie Promises Busy Program
Interest grows in the Grape Festival planned for July 29 at the Fruit Experiment Station seven miles north of Bowie. Morning events include a station tour Band Concert crowning of the festival queen and radio broadcast by Murray Cox. Afternoon features include a speech by Dr. R D Lewis and discussions on grape and fruit problems with observations of grape varieties and other fruits. Free grape juice will be served and lunches sold by County Home Demonstration Clubs.

Right of Way Secured For New Highway To Newport
Commissioner Howard Wheeler announces that nearly twenty deeds have been secured for the first section of the Bowie to Newport and Jacksboro highway. He credits property owners for cooperation and says fencing will begin once stakes are set by State Highway Engineer Raby, who is surveying the Montague to Forestburg and Mallard Farm-to-Market route.

This Old Tree Paid Off After It Died
Three squirrels and a hive found in an old cottonwood near Bowie yielded five gallons of honey valued at about 22.50 at Bowie stores. T. W. Crabtree and his son Billy with helpers cut the tree and recovered the honey and bees. A bee sting caused minor injuries to Billy and Ed.

Bowie prepares for Independence Day events on Friday July 4 with a morning parade led by the Bowie High School Band and Colors. A full day at Pelham Park includes contests bands veterans honors a Gainesville Wildcats vs Bowie Oilers game and a 9 PM to midnight dance with Elenberger's Ragtime Band. Curbs and gutters will be added on South Mason Street and Clay to improve drainage as part of State Highway paving toward Newport and Jacksboro.

Remodeling Underway After Fire At Eakman Building
Remodeling work is progressing on the burned Eakman building and Lions Club Hall. The Lions expect to return in ten days to two weeks. Western Cleaners will occupy the main part and Mrs. Gova Faggard's Beauty Shop will resume its former section. Bob Patterson, photographer, leases the remaining space. The fire June 2 caused about 20000 in damage. insurance covered most of the loss.

Vetch Harvest Begins on This Ranch in Bowie Area
The Bowie area reports a several thousand acre vetch harvest under way this week. J. L. Patterson of Vashti grows vetch with Abruzzi rye on nine acres, yielding about 400 pounds per acre, aided by phosphate and inoculated seed. Officials W. E. Farrell and J. J. Post observe.
