A community boosting campaign highlights Bowie Texas favorable tax rate of only 1 on 30 percent assessed valuation. It calls for housing to accommodate 1250 additional families tied to Camp Wolters revival and notes several large payrolls and industries established since the wartime camp.
Earl W. Newton of the Boy Scouts of America announces a den mothers training course at First Presbyterian Church Bowie Tuesday morning January 30 from 9 30 to 11 00. The course aims to prepare mothers to supportCub Scouts and enable boys to join the program.
Mrs. Claude Martin leads a drive for National Foundation of Cancer Research funds and presents the film One Out of Ten at 3 p.m. Wednesday January 31 in the Methodist Church basement. All women are invited, plus any men who may attend, with showings also planned in local schools.
The Wall Quartet entertained Rotarians at a Wednesday program with an unusually large crowd. Paul Donald is slated to speak at the next meeting next Wednesday.
At a Bowie merchants meeting the Bowie Retail Merchants Association outlined steps to cut bad credit risk and hot checks. Members will share slow pay names and hot payer data to curb losses, linking with state and national associations so records travel with movers. Secretary Mrs Earl Sansom notes meetings occur every fourth Monday at 7 30.
Rev W W Baker announces a revival at Fundamental Baptist Church from Sunday January 28 to February 11. Evangelist Jack Power of Jacksboro will preach twice daily with Ray Cobb as singer Patsy Meakins as pianist and M D Wall directing special music. power topics include The Remedy for the Present World Crisis and The Unpardonable Sin. Services at 10 30 a m and 7 30 p m.
Mrs. H A Dodson reports arrival of new spring stock from Dallas markets at Dodson Department Store Bowie. The store will feature an established line of dresses in regular and half sizes and a high class ladies millinery collection offered at improved prices.
Mr and Mrs H S Trout publishers of the Bowie News travel to Austin for the Texas Press Association midwinter meeting. Governor and Mrs Alan Shivers invite the publishers and their wives to a reception at the Governor's Mansion Saturday evening.
The firm Moyer Dutton will continue the business started by the late Kenneth D. Moyer and a partner. It pledges to maintain prior sales and service policies and thanks past patrons. The partners express sincere appreciation for existing relationships and invite former customers to continue patronage. They will miss Mr. Moyer but commit to carrying on his work with his high hopes in mind.
Charlie Smith was admitted to Bowie Hospital last Friday with a serious condition. He is listed as not having visitors at this time due to medical precautions.
Shell leases 800 acres near Stoneburg as An-Son advances in the Boedeker area west of Bowie. An-Son tests and acidizes wells including Brooks No 1 while Foster No 2 shows promising signs. Constantine No 1 Coach drills at 6600 feet. Heldthe Young Unit is shut for orders after a deep test. Gehrt No 1 Liggett is dry. new G E Blackmon tract well progresses northwest of Bowie at about 5000 feet.
Dr Dodsworth reports progress in the polio drive as deposits total 1034.11 toward a 1100 goal. Thursday Club ladies contribute 532.35 by Wednesday night. A square dance at City Auditorium basement on Tuesday January 30 will raise funds.
Loveall's Steam Laundry moved to 204 Smythe Street this week and will open Monday. The new site features much new equipment with promises of better service and invites both old patrons and new customers to visit.
A large delegation of state and national poultry authorities toured Johnson Poultry Ranch led by M. Johnson and Sam Lovett. Visitors included Sam A. Moore from the National Poultry Improvement Plan, T A Hensarling of the Texas Poultry Improvement Assn, Leo Fuchs, Leo F. Michalka of Ideal Hatchery, W. J. Moore of Texas A&M, J. C. Williams and Henry Thuern of A&M, and James R. Grubbs.
A new De Soto Plymouth dealer Stout-Chapman Motors opens in Bowie in the former Hardeman lot next to the post office. B W Chapman and J R Stout lead the venture with Marvin London as manager and Mrs London directing the office. A 1951 De Soto will be shown Saturday January 27 with new styling features and improved economy.
Citizens are reminded to pay their poll tax by January 31 to be eligible to vote in Texas elections. The notice outlines the legal requirement, potential upcoming local and state elections, and where to pay the $1.75 poll tax at Montague or Eva Giles’s tax collector office in the Bowie Auditorium basement.
Shorty Hendrix, the new constable, reports a busy week with 13 speeding tickets and multiple infractions. A Bowie group sped through red lights, hit 90 mph, and fled to a ditch near Stoneburg where charges were filed. Fines range from 12 to 36 dollars. a Dallas woman faced 36 dollars after speeding and unsafe driving.
Work finished this week on converting the old basin at City Pump station increasing capacity to 360 000 gallons from 180 000. Watson farm reservoir and two stand pipes plus the basin boost Bowie supply to two days if pumps fail at once. Improves insurance key rate for Bowie properties.
The Go-to-Church Drive led by Bowie laymen launched at First Presbyterian Church as churches across Bowie unite for a Sunrise Easter service. C. C. Harris chaired last year’s unified laymen effort, with Dr. C. J. Dodsworth elected to head this year’s movement. H. S. Trout spoke on Personalized Religious Service urging Christians to live their faith and help those in need. Represented churches included First Methodist, First Baptist, Fundamental Baptist, First Presbyterian, Free Will Baptist, South Side Baptist, First Christian Bowie, Sunset, Nocona, and Saint Jo.
The Bowie High Mixed Choir sponsors an amateur contest Friday February 2 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium Proceeds fund choir robes Students from nearby schools may enter by contacting Catherine Hastings at Bowie High School.
Sam Heard and R C Cady retire from Matthews Heard Cady Hardware in Bowie Texas after decades of leadership. Emin Heard and son Gordon Heard assume full control of the business begun in 1894 with roots dating to E A Gwaltney Son hardware. Gordon Heard graduates in business administration and returns with wife June White to Bowie.
