Dan L. Martin of the Bowie School system for about 20 years and former superintendent died in Dallas on Tuesday. Funeral services were held at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church with interment at Laurel Land Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife Ada Belle Martin son Dan Lee Martin Jr and four brothers. Memorial gifts were sent to the Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas.
A. V. Yeager buys Tip's Milk Bar including the building and lot and will operate it as The Hutch. Bowie's Jackrabbits home city, Yeager aims for a welcoming venue serving hamburgers sandwiches ice cream milk shakes breakfast and plate lunches with good coffee. An opening date will be announced in the News.
Dave Germany of the Bowie News staff is greatly improved after illness confined him to his room for several days. He is reported in good spirits and back at work.
The Bowie campaign reached and exceeded the $1,100 target for the March of Dimes with final figures pending final worker reports. The Thursday Club contributed $681.68 to the drive.
Nearly all oil work around Bowie halted by weather. Texas Company Young-Hoeld unit near Bowie began drill stem test reaching 3380 feet mud with low gas. bottomhole pressure 3350 pounds, moving toward Ellenberger. Dry holes reported for Constantin's Couch No 1 and Gehrt No 1 Liggett. deeper drilling possible if Ellenberger test looks favorable. Texas Company Rates No 2 at Queen's Peak continues drilling at 4925 feet.
The Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts of Bowie were entertained Thursday night January 25 with a covered dish supper by the V. F. W. Auxiliary.
A laymen committee meeting outlines plans for a Go to Church Easter drive with a male chorus under Maborn Wall. General Chairman Dr. C. J. Dodsworth oversees preparations as the Ministerial Association chooses the Easter speaker. A February 12 meeting at First Methodist Church will feature the Methodist Men's Fellowship program. The group will also attend a February 7 gathering at Saint Jo Presbyterian Church to organize a laymen Go-to-Church effort there.
A group of girls around ten met at Mrs. Aubrey Beasley home Friday January 26 to organize a Camp Fire Girls group. Officers were elected and the next meeting is Friday February 2 at Mrs. Herbert Jackson 304 E Wise. Girls around ten may attend.
Reactions to the stabilization order issued last week show the wage and price freeze with many exceptions. Violations carry fines up to 10000 dollars and a year in prison. Farm products and several services are exempt, while Bowie merchants expect little impact. Washington permits more labor prices with no rollback on production costs, keeping clothing and processed foods high or rising.
William J. Simpson of Fort Worth begins work as educational director and assistant to the pastor at First Baptist Bowie. He will work Friday to Sunday each week while studying for a Religious Education degree at Southwestern Baptist Seminary, Fort Worth, and plans to preach full time here after May. He is a Baylor University graduate and a single Texas native.
Bowie boys defeated Henrietta 78 to 22 as Wilburn Booher led with 16 points, Barton Massey 14 and James Robinson 12. Bowie girls beat Henrietta 52 to 8, while Bowie Cottontails defeated Henrietta Juniors 58 to 12. Final regular home games and upcoming schedule noted.
The Bowie Independent School District plans to submit a comprehensive building program to voters including a twelve-room elementary school to replace the East Ward building and a modern regulation gymnasium at Bowie High. Superintendent Claude Thompson noted plans call for improved natural lighting and a weather protected service entrance for bus loading and unloading.
A historic cold snap hit Bowie with temperatures dropping to zero just before daylight on Thursday. Thermometers at Belleview registered 2 below zero at 7 20 a m. The event followed a blizzard that began Sunday night and brought heavy snow and closed highways and schools across much of Texas.

Athens resident Billy Caldwell marked his 100th birthday by walking five miles from his home near Murchise to town. He said he never felt safer from the grave and that you seldom hear of a man over 100 dying.

O A Gray has bought the residence at the corner of Pe Can and Lindsey streets, long the home of the late Mrs Mitchell. The six room house sits on a 83 by 147 foot lot. Gray plans remodeling and possible future brick or tile business building. The site is linked to the first hospital run by Dr Yantes between 1900 and 1910 before a fire. Mrs Mitchell owned it for about 50 years, with many bulbs shrubs and trees planted over time.
The amateur contest scheduled for Friday February 2 has been cancelled due to weather and will be rescheduled. The Bowie High Mixed Chorus sponsors the event.
Roy Stom, son of Mr and Mrs C O Stom Sr of Bowie, was critically injured at an oil rig on the Boedeker lease four miles west of Bowie around noon Tuesday. He suffered fractured skull and facial injuries after a frozen line struck him when a frozen pressure pump burst. He was taken to Bowie Hospital by driller Dick Thomason, who also helped after a plane accident two years earlier.
Lions Club plans a special Ladies Night and an address by District Governor Elmer Adkins at the Thursday meeting. Adkins welcomed about ten new members during Melvin Jones Week while E A Hill leads the program. Previous week Wichita Falls Toastmasters performed, and Bowie Lions voted against admitting Red China to the UN, with G Doc Jackson presiding.

Charles A. Smith died Monday night at 11 00 in Bowie Clinic Hospital after a long illness. Services were held Wednesday at 2 p m at First Presbyterian Church of Bowie with Rev. Charles A Tucker and Rev. J C Mann officiating. He was born May 9 1889 in Rosebud Texas and lived in Gainesville before moving to Bowie in 1937. He worked for the Santa Fe Railway for 23 years and later served as deputy sheriff in Cooke County. He married Hazel Johnson on November 29 1939 and later operated in the cafe business with her.
Mrs. Claude L. Martin county drive chair announces a delay in the showing of the film One Out of Ten for the National Foundation of Cancer Research. The screening is rescheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. in the basement of the First Methodist Church and aims to reach all city school children with invited women and interested men.
