We present a New Year message from Dr E Bradshaw president of the Woodmen of the World. The dawn of January first marks the best year in time and the fruit of heroic sacrifice will ripen this year. The note urges readers to endure sacrifices of the past and look forward to rewards and renewed faith in the coming year.
Burkburnett Star reports a chamber of commerce speaker saying violent mental states stem from loss of self control and imagined insults rather than physical illness. He urges sane, logical response to recovery pressures and personal setbacks to build strength and discipline.
Funeral services were held at the sister’s home with Rev. Bell and B. B. Brietenhirt officiating. Miss Anderson died of a heart attack on New Year’s Day after long high blood pressure. Born May 16, 1880 in Dickerson County Tennessee, she moved to Bowie in 1884 and lived there over 50 years. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church and is survived by numerous brothers and sisters in several states.
Fépar Jonds of Asphalt arrived to begin work on Rock Street paving in Bowie. The project will roll and spread gravel layers before laying asphalt. Work will proceed along Rock Street to Tarrant Street and then Main Street.
The Duty Federation will meet Friday January 15 at 8 in the club room. Members are reminded to attend and participate in the planned agenda.
The January term of Montague District Court opened with Judge Earl P. Hall presiding. He impaneled the Grand Jury, named R. C. Miller foreman, and outlined first week civil docket and three weeks of criminal docket settings. Judge Hall, 88, succeeds Vincent Stine, outlines career and prior service while Stine’s long tenure noted.
Harry Stout succeeds J K Hunter as Commissioner and moves headquarters from Bowie to Southerland Cotton Yard. Emmet Cox replaces Fred McGregory as District Clerk. Marvin F Loudon sworn in as Representative set to assume duties in Austin with the Legislature convening.
Montague Seventeenth County in the state has issued 1430 agricultural conservation checks totaling 71 195 44 dollars. About 600 checks remain to be received as Montague County was the 17th county to be issued payments under the 1936 program. The county and state offices credit local committees and clerical staff for prompt producer signups and timely payments. Details of the 1987 program are expected in 30 to 60 days.
School children and teachers in Bowie public schools returned to classes after a two week Christmas vacation. Pupils face mid term examinations and the start of the second semester, signaling a busy period ahead.
Austin reports Governor Allred appointed Dr. J. T Lawson of Bowie to the State Medical Board. Reappointments included Dr. N. D. Buie of Marlin and Dr. Phil R. Russell of Fort Worth. Dr. O. P. Kiel of Wichita Falls takes a six year term to succeed Dr. Crow of Dallas, with Crow completing Kiel term ending in 1939. Dr. Lawson will succeed Dr. J. Allen Kyle of Houston.
Remodeling began this week at J A Brite's Dry Goods Store with interior repainting and redecorating. Exterior work includes a new roof and other general repairs.
Miss Helen Senl of Sioux City Iowa told police she and another girl were killed by their own explosive blast in a powder shed. She said a gunman shot the other girl and herself before triggering the blast. She regained consciousness and crawled out, but the explosion left them dead or severely injured.
Negotiations for the Bowie Cotton Mill sale and reopening show strong prospects with Walter Hogg of Dallas Cotton Mills Co. as purchaser. If funded, mill to operate within weeks, creating 30 to 40 jobs, payroll of 2000 to 2500 monthly, and contribute about 600 annually in school taxes.
Thomas H Henderson age 41 died at his mother's home last Thursday. Funeral services were held Friday with Rev. George F Korne gay officiating. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery by Burgess Funeral Home. Survived by mother a daughter Mrs Wedel Simpson Abilene three sisters Mrs P H Swain Pittsburg Mrs Fred Cheek Fort Worth Mrs Carl Sham burger San Antonio and three brothers Elmer G St Joseph Michigan Kenneth H Ft Worth and C S Henderson Bowie.
A radio message from A O C Williams president of the Federal Land Bank of Houston will be broadcast to National Farm Loan Association members on the day of the annual meeting. The Texas Quality Network stations KPRC WBAP WFAA and WAOI will carry the program from 8 00 to 3 15 p m Tuesday January 12.
Missouri Frances Cooper a long time resident of Mon Tague County died at her daughter's home Monday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 PM with Rev. Hughs of Vernon officiating, burial at Elmwood Cemetery. She left five children including C. Cooper of Fort Worth and B. Pollard.
A survey by the All-South Development Council notes Southern industrial leaders expect a strong 1937 with a 10 to 15 percent rise in goods produced and sales, aided by tax stability, new mills, and expanded paper, steel, coal, lumber, and chemical sectors across states like Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Mrs W M Wiseman along with Earl P Hall of Henrietta and Mrs W Wiseman with children from Petrolia were luncheon guests on Tuesday hosted by Mr and Mrs Ted Moore.
Funeral services were held at the Episcopal church in Brownsville for Katherine G. Stringfellow 47 a former Bowie girl. Survivors include her mother Mrs J A Graham two daughters Nancy and Mrs W Ruth a sister Miss Berniece Graham of Fort Worth and Mrs Marion Hedrick of Pharr three brothers Franklin James and Robert M all of Brownsville. Her father the late James A Graham was a noted border lawyer.
Drilling started this week on the Uncle Bill Davis farm four miles west of Stoneburg across from the Rowland place. A standard rig operated by contractor Jim Leeds with drillers Hank Goodspeed and crew will reach 3,500 feet, possibly extending to 4,500 feet if a favorable showing occurs. Workmen receive half cash and half in acreage.
Mrs. Rachel Elizabeth Cox died Saturday January 2 at her Bowie home after being bedfast since April due to a fractured hip. Services were Sunday afternoon with Rev. George F. Kernagy officiating and burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. She is survived by four daughters, two sons, two grandchildren and one sister.
