A man seeks solace in a Christmas Eve hotel room while a younger woman confesses loneliness. In a separate Christmas saga a harsh store owner is softened by a reading of Dickens and a thief’s demand, ending with renewed holiday spirit as overdue bills are paid and hope returns.
Funeral services were held at Burgess chapel at 3 pm for Robert L. Johnson 72 native of Montague County. He died at his Bowie home Saturday of a heart attack. Burial was in Krushy Cemetery seven miles east of Bowie. Survived by wife two daughters and one sister with several out of town visitors attending.
City Marshall Charlie Jackson witnessed a football game between Burkburnett and Nocona in Wichita Falls on Friday.
A letter collection from several Bowie area children dated 1936 requests Christmas gifts. Included are Fay Rucker aged 4, Billy de Modioe aged 2, Annie Rucker aged 1, Lorene Rucker, Eugene Rucker, Margaret Nell Traylor, Monda Markham, and Donna Hogan among others. The notes mention shoes, boots, dolls, toys, candies, a dresser, skates, and various small items, reflecting a community young readers’ appeal to Santa.
A plea for heightened caution during the holiday travel season. The message urges drivers to stay alert and avoid accidents, noting more vehicles on the road than last year and stressing human vigilance over relying solely on safety appliances.
Multiple young residents from Bowie Texas write Santa with Christmas requests all dated in December 1936. Children named include David Lewis Dan Harlan Barber A V Carpening Jr Joe Fowler Donald Wood Mary Louise Kilcrease Glenna Kilcrease and Edward Franklin Kilcrease asking for toys shoes candy fruit and other small gifts. W A Brown and Mrs. Alice Foster married in Bowie last Saturday evening. Rev Thurman of the Church of Christ officiated. The Bridgeport couple have lived here many years and friends wish them happiness and success.
Sunday service at the First Presbyterian Church saw Rev. B. Blake Breitenhirt installed as pastor. Dr. Frank C. Brown preached on I will Build My Church, with Dr. FE. Lowrance delivering the charge to the congregation. Special music by the vested choir and a vocal solo were highlighted. a Sunday night program supports Ministerial Relief and the public is invited.
The Methodist Junior class led by Mrs. Floyd Specht enjoyed a social at Mrs. J. B. Wadsworth’s home with games and refreshments. A handkerchief shower honored Mrs. Bill John McGee at her mother’s home. Mr. and Mrs. McGee have moved to Mexico for work. Mrs. A. G. Hodges, longtime resident, died December 14 and leaves a large family. A community Christmas tree program is planned at the Methodist church.
