The editor mocks a Lions Club president who claimed potato fields in southern Colorado would yield 1 000 bushels per acre. In fact the speaker said fields of 50 to 200 acres produce about 250 sacks per acre this year, valued at about $4 per hundred.
Rear Admiral George T. Petten F is pictured at his office in the navy yard where he commands. He relieved Rear Admiral Joseph I. Defrees who was placed in command of the air force. Petten is in his thirty eighth year of service and has been commended for conspicuous service dating back to the Boxer rebellion.
Montague County voters returned Saturday to settle run-off contests for three county offices, congressional seats, a judicial post, and two state roles. Marvin F. London led county tickets. H. T. Chandler narrowly won Sheriff. J. K. Hunter was defeated for Precinct 2 Commissioner. J. P. Clingingsmith retained Precinct 5. Speer led the ticket for Associate Justice with 8,156 votes to Sundenberg 832. district totals show McFarlane 2,189 and Gossett 2,371 for Congress, with other races listed.
Back in Bowie's early days Warren Bond and Roy Jackson ran a small barn by the square where modern shops stand. They advertised Second Monday as trading day with rock buildings I C Giles Grocery and the Rock Saloon. Trades, stock handling, and a pair of horses for mules began the tradition that continued through the years despite bad weather.
Foster Robinson addressed the Bowie Rotary Club on civil service with emphasis on its postal system. The meeting in Morrow's Grill Room featured President Dar L. Martin, invocation by Dr. Hornburg, and guests including Mr. Watkins and Rev. A. C. Turner. County Judge Earl C. Fitts presented six Texas flags with historical summaries.
The Bowie City Council asks citizens to give name and precise fire location when turning in alarms and to avoid hindering firefighters. A city ordinance requires keeping at least 300 feet from fire trucks and not blocking access. Citizens are urged to drive carefully and refrain from obstructing fire apparatus as the well equipped department fights fires.
Coach Len Hill supervises 28 prospective players at Bowie athletic field as the 1936 Jackrabbits begin drills. Six lettermen from 1935 return, with 10–12 more expected when school opens. Schedule lists nine games, including Sept. 18 at Bowie versus Wichita Falls B team, plus Open dates and a potential championship game. A practice injury to Richard Golden breaks his collarbone. prognosis not serious but timing unsure.
The sacred musical playlet Love's Victory by Mrs. M. A. Bryan was staged at the Texas Centennial grounds in Dallas on Sunday August 23. The cast included Miss Inez Rudy Mrs Homer B Latham Mrs C S Henderson Mrs L J Purkey Miss Viola Skinner Miss Aileen Burgess Mrs Dewey Price of Fort Worth Miss Dixie Bell Turns Miss Melba Culp G Dee Jackson Ike Parks Barney Whitehead Henry Parks L E Goodjoin Holt Spain Aubrey Horn and M A Bryan. The performance was well received by a very appreciative audience.
At a Bowie Independent School District trustees meeting J. C. McNatt resigned and Temple H. Yarbrough was appointed for the remainder of the term. Dr. Dodsworth was chosen secretary, taking over the position previously held by McNatt.
A. F. Thurman of Haskell Texas bought the National Hotel from A. O. Taylor last Friday. Thurman, a Church of Christ minister and former mayor of Haskell, is accompanied by his wife. They anticipate visiting relatives soon, and Bowie welcomes the new owners.
Ice coated Stamford pavement when a 3,000 pound load slid from a flatbed truck and shattered. The thermometer had dropped to 106 in Stamford the previous day.
Regular enrollment for high and grammar students begins next week. Ninth through eleventh grade students from Newport are to report by grade on September 3 through 7 with specific times. A school bus will bring tenth and eleventh graders from Newport to Bowie High School, accommodating about 15 to 20 students.
Congressman W D McFarlane wins a third term nomination in a heated runoff over District Attorney Ed Gossett. With over 55 000 votes tallied across most precincts, McFarlane leads 28 995 to 26 280 aided by large margins in Wise Wichita and Young counties. Eight of fifteen counties go to Gossett. Final totals were incomplete with seven precincts outstanding.
Final tabulation counts 743 855 votes from 234 of 254 counties with 167 complete and seven of two unheard from counties not voting Saturday. Col Ernest O Thompson narrowly wins re election to railroad commission over Dallas foe Frank S Morris. J E McDonald re elected agriculture commissioner defeating George B Terrell amid New Deal farm policy support.
Miss Mary Frances Pierce is reported improving at Bowie Clinic hospital after admission Monday for treatment of an infected throat. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Pierce.
I Parks, new district manager for Lyon and Matthews Co. with headquarters in Lawton Oklahoma, toured Amarillo this week with local manager Date Eales. He praised the firm’s business and its future in building trade prospects. A Wichita Falls conference by the Federal Housing Administration was attended by N B Gary of Gary Lumber Co and Mr Eales.
The News has a letter from Major Sidney J. recruiting officer of the U S Army in Dallas stating James A Biggerstaff and David C Housted of Bowie have enlisted in the regular army and are assigned to a cavalry company at Fort Bliss near El Paso.
Bowie school faculty members earned degrees from N U S T C at Den ton last Wednesday August 19. Floyce Chandler Anda Doughty and Mrs J B Lewis earned B S degrees while Ruth Robinson and Dorothy Spain earned B A degrees.
