A Bowie funeral joke, a satire on capitalism and socialism, a gas bath near miss, and a pronunciation anecdote about Montague Texas close the humorous set.
The First Methodist Church will host Bishop W C Martin of Dallas at Sunday morning services. District Superintendent Rev Walter Vanpool will also attend. Rev Mara and his family return from vacation for the service and Baker lunch will be served at noon.
George Rucker director of Bowie High School band and festival chairman mailed invitations to ten area bands within 60 miles. The line includes Nocona Saint Jo Henrietta Jacksboro Decatur Denton Gainesville Wichita Falls Waurika and Terral Oklahoma. Benson Bros will barbecue for 500 bandsmen and trophies will be given to all participating bands.
Ferndale Creamery announces higher prices in Bowie for dairy products. Milk now costs 22 cents per quart for pasteurized and 23 cents for homogenized. Other dairy prices adjust accordingly citing higher production costs and other uncontrollable factors.
Melvin Dansby coordinator for Montague County Veterans Vocational School was named to a post on the A&M College faculty and will report September 1. He and Mrs Dansby will move to Bryan within days. his successor had not been chosen as of Thursday morning.
The Bowie High School Band under director George Rucker and assistant Phil Baker is selected by Region X officers to represent the region at the Mid-Century Music Festival during the Texas State Fair on October 18. Only first division bands eligible. twenty bands total, two per district. Denton High School also chosen from Region X.
The Rev. Norman Paul Behrmann, 24, will be installed as pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Sunday August 27 at 8 p m. The Rev. R L Young of Burkburnett will officiate. Behrmann, son of Rev. F W Behrmann, was born in Coryell County and trained at Concordia College Fort Wayne and Concordia Seminary St Louis with stints at Gethsemane Detroit and Arcadia Camp Michigan. A reception will follow on the church lawn.
An air-conditioner on the north side of Travel-Inn Courts was damaged beyond repair when struck by lightning during the 4 a m storm. Fire started in the window frame and a brick wall crack appeared. Night Watch Martin prevented further damage as blown fuses saved the electrical system and TV in the office. The lightning bent a fan blade and burned motor insulation.
The School Board of Kowie Public Schools will convene at the high school on Tuesday August 29 at 7 30 p m for a public hearing and the adoption of the 1959 51 school year budget.
Returns from the second primary will be provided by Ben son and Benson and the Bowie News as results come in Saturday night. The public can attend at the Wilson Drug Store on Wise street where a loudspeaker will broadcast the tallies. The ballot includes county treasurer Fred B. Wall versus J. P. Roberts and a state senate race with Wayne Wagonseller of Montague County opposing R. L. Proffer of Denton County.
Chairman Harve Ratliff of the Montague County American Red Cross calls attention to the Red Cross meeting in the district courtroom in Montague Monday night at 7 45 oclock. Mrs Kenneth W Jameson of Ranger field representative will be present.
The consolidated Bowie Independent School District and Newport district held a Thursday election on maximum tax rate and bond assumption. Bowie voters approved spreading the tax 183 to 53 and bond 184 to 54. Newport supported both proposals 21 to 0. No tax-rate increase was enacted as the maximum already applies.
Cotton fields three miles south of Bellevue were leveled by hail on Tuesday night with the Mark Davis place hit hardest, total crop loss reported. A two year old neighborhood house sustained a leaky roof after the storm. Rainfall totals reached an inch Monday night in Bowie and an inch and a half Tuesday night. Smiths Creek highway between Bellevue and Henrietta was impassable and traffic rerouted via Ringgold. Bowie City Lake spilled over for the first time in five years.
Multiple oil wells located or started near Bowie this week including P. E. Boedeker No 1 B and Mrs A Richardson No 5. The test on Boedeker sublease yielded 44 gravity oil. Texas Company set locations at Lydia Whitaker No 1 and Fry No 4 while drilling on Vanbibber No 4 and Rock Springs School offset wells. Great Southern Life No 7 also reported as a new location near the area.
Sgt. Edward L. McDowell killed in action in World War II identified by the War Department. His sister Mrs. M L Lowe of Bowie awaits final plans for burial in the local cemetery with Burgess Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Orth Vowell reports a large vegetable truck rolled over about a mile and a half north of Stoneburg Monday around 5 AM. It took the rest of the day to right the vehicle. No serious damage occurred as the truck slid onto soft ground off the road shoulder but was eased back onto the road afterward.
The Bowie school unveils new programs for the current year including distributive education for juniors and seniors to earn credits toward graduation. An accredited physical education program for boys and girls will require all students to register unless physician excusal. Industrial arts courses in drawing and shop work plus a unit in special education are added. a teacher will provide instruction for children with physical handicaps. The School Board has also purchased a new bus to be delivered this year.
Bowie High School football season reserved seats go on sale Thursday September 7 at 8 am at the school tax office. Eva Giles tax assessor says the date was approved by the Athletic Association Committee and the board and that pricing will be finalised next meeting. Preseason interest is already evident from calls to the office.
Director George Rucker invites students to a Tuesday night meeting at the band hall to organize a beginner's band. Parents may attend mornings for talent testing and instrument planning. Three exceptional students will receive bass horns to assist those finding instrument costs.
Montague County absentee balloting for the August primary totaled 196 up to 5 p.m. Tuesday, the last day, just 61 more than Tarrant County where 137 votes had been polled up to Monday night, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Local balloting was also in excess of that for the first primary.

A revival campaign opened Thursday night at the First Baptist Church with Rev. G B Bradshaw, pastor, and evangelist Clifton Brannon, president of the Texas Baptist Brotherhood, delivering messages. Earl Rogers of Borger directs the music. Services are at 10 a m and 8 p m. evening meetings outdoors. The public is invited. Brannon left a legal salary to devote himself to preaching.
Twenty four men from First Baptist Church attended a District 12 Baptist Brotherhood meeting at Camp Canals Monday night. State Brotherhood president Clifton Brannon was the principal speaker.
A joint Chamber of Commerce and City Council meeting discussed a pilot garbage plan. Mayor David Major supported the effort, noting current service costs around 4000 dollars annually and proposing a 12 month contract with 500 residents paying up to one dollar monthly. The plan envisions twice weekly pickups, required covered cans, and a packer truck. Jack Slayden and Paul Taliaferro from the Chamber were named to help coordinate with the Sanitation Chair and City Council.
