Miss Marjorie Taylor about 23 was injured when a large watermelon rolled from a front seat onto her back as their car slid on a wet road near Bellevue. She was treated at Bowie Hospital with no broken bones, and she and the other passengers remained unharmed.
Dr and Mrs J R Applegate attended a relatives gathering in Garland over the weekend. They then saw the Star Light Operetta presentation of Desert Song in Dallas.
Mayor Major said Lake Bowie is full and spilling for the first time in about five years after rainfall in the Stoneburg area. A one inch rain in Bowie brought moisture for farms aiding peanut crops while some fields stayed too dry for plowing. Good soil prep prospects for planting vetch and fall cover crops.
Rev. Alvie Hudson preaches nightly revival at the Free Will Baptist Church on 501 Strong Street. James Trout leads inspirational song services as Rev. Tiff Covington, the pastor, extends a cordial welcome to all attendees for the 8 o'clock services each night.
Bowie High School will offer a new distributive education program next term under Supt C H Thompson. Glenn C Moore is named coordinator and will oversee classroom training plus afternoon employment in retail and wholesale firms. The program aims to bridge school and jobwork, with junior and senior students earning lab credit and wages and potentially college credit for courses in their final years.
Coach R. E. Mattingly and M. L. Massey lead 34 prospective Bowie Jackrabbits in the first practice of the season. The squad, facing a tougher schedule in district 11-A, will rebuild after losing the regional championship starting lineup. Key returnees include Barton Massey, James Robinson, Clark Wheeler, Wilburn Booker, and Darwin Watts as leaders for the new year.
Forestburg marked its 1950 Homecoming Day with over 1,200 attendees from near and far. The event featured a live oak grove feast and honored organizer Mrs. Kate Russ, Mrs. Lena Mae Wilson, speaker Louis C. Oldham of Amarillo, and emcee Steve Denham, photo by Kent Bellah Studio Saint Jo.

George Rucker northwest of Bowie led Fort Worth market with 36 white face calves averaging 485 pounds. Twenty steer calves sold at 29.12 cents and 16 heifer calves at 28.5 cents per pound. These were this year's range grown calves not fed.
Perkins-Timberlake Store in Bowie runs ads offering easy-to-make fabrics suitable for back-to-school dresses. Items include corduroys wool jersey velveteen whippet cloth all-wool flannel and other fabrics for young women and children.
Clifton W. Brannon, famed evangelist and former law expert for R. G. Le Tourneau Inc, will lead a revival at First Baptist Bowie from August 24 to September 3 with Earl W. Rogers directing music. Brannon rose to fame after a Georgia Supreme Court victory at age 22 in a case involving a farmer selling produce without a license.
The county rural schools start the first week of September led by B. Williams. Labor Day causes Lone Star School to begin Tuesday, while Montague also opens early. Bowie district begins officially September 11 with a nine month term.
R. W. Garrett, Bowie businessman, is named as a member of the Texas Economy Commission by Gov Allan Shivers. He accepted pending receipt of further information after a letter from Secretary of State Ben Shepherd indicated he was being considered. The commission, a citizen group, seeks to study state executive operations for efficiency.
War Department telegram to Mr and Mrs H M Huskey 505 Wise Street says their son Sgt Paul Huskey was wounded in action in Korea. Paul had written of a slight wound earlier. He adds that battles are terrific and American troops sometimes must evacuate positions so quickly they cannot gather personal belongings.
A page ad in the News highlights Back-to-School specials at Al Gillett's Steve Gillett's in Bowie. It lists scores of items including crepes, fairies, silks and various clothing for boys and men, plus electric blankets in five colors at a special low price.
Burgess Funeral Home has redone the front office manager's office and the chapel with new paper and paint and added draperies. The renovation includes special heavy weight paper for lasting service and a refreshed overall appearance.
