Mr and Mrs Agnes Robins and son Richard of Wichita Falls spent last week in Bowie with J E Smith and family. Their daughter Alice Corine who had been visiting Bowie fell suddenly ill and was rushed to the Bowie Clinic where she remains seriously ill.
Butch Quisenberry completed major upgrades to a modern abattoir in Bowie. The新 plant features painted buildings and fences, meat inspection compliant interiors, modern disposal and mechanical handling systems, steam boiler, fire‑screened doors and windows, and advanced refrigeration. The facility offers custom slaughtering for local retailers, farmers, and ranchers for killing, prep, locker storage, and canning.
The Bowie high school band competes in region X state contest in Denton this week. The event includes band orchestras choral groups and solos. Bowie enters 18 solos and nine ensembles with the band performing Friday at 3 00 pm and sight reading at 3 30 pm. Class B entrants include Bowie Denton Gainsville McKinney and others.
The body of Captain James M. Greenwood 29 a flier killed in a Christmas day Shanghai crash left Shanghai March 20 aboard the S S Marine Lynx. It arrived in San Francisco April 7 met by his father and then to Austin Texas for burial April 11 at Memorial Park Cemetery. He is survived by his widow two children mother father two brothers and two sisters. Born Bowie October 31 1917 he served in World War II as instructor at Texas airfields and overseas as transport pilot flying the Hump before joining China National Aviation Corp. and the Chinese government as a pilot.
Mr and Mrs Frank Benson return to Bowie from Mineral Wells after health improvements. They sold their Golden Rule courts in Mineral Wells to Mr and Mrs Roy Wesson and bought Mr Wesson's modern home on East Wise Street in Bowie. Tip Jimerson arranged both transactions. The Wessons moved to Mineral Wells to manage their new properties.
Mr and Mrs James Chappell and children spent Sunday and Monday in Dallas. During the trip Mr Chappell attended a school for John Deere dealers.
President Truman proclaims Cancer Week in the United States as the American Cancer Society urges public action. County chairman Mrs. Claude Martin leads volunteers, seeking donations for prevention education and cancer research. The society lists cancer danger signs including sores that won’t heal, lumps, changes in moles, indigestion, hoarseness, bleeding, and bowel shifts.
There will be a gathering of those interested in better poultry and eggs and a stronger Bowie Trade Territory market. The meeting is Saturday afternoon April 19 at 2 p m in the City Auditorium with out of town speakers planned. prompt attendance is urged.
Mrs. Alice Buck and her twin daughters Carolyn and Kathryn of Bonita spent a recent week visiting relatives in Bowie. W. W. Caswell of Tohoka Texas is visiting relatives and friends in Bowie and Sunset.
Chamber of Commerce Week is being observed across Texas this week. An ad from the Bowie Chamber and its 182 members salutes progress in community affairs with the slogan What a man does for himself dies with him. What a man does for his community lives for ever and the Governor's proclamation for the week is included.
Lt Comdr Donnelly arranges naval recruiting in Bowie for two days with a sound equipped vehicle. The Wichita Falls Naval Reserve team will enroll volunteers aged 17 to 40 in the V-6 program with or without prior service. Veterans can enroll at their old rate, advance in rate, or join with full pay and no civilian life disruption.
Norman Branson is scoutmaster of a new troop for boys aged 12 to 15 organized by the local American Legion chapter. Tommie Whitecotton serves as assistant scoutmaster with Charles Coffield heading the Legion committee. Plans were finalized at a Wednesday meeting, and interested boys may contact Raymond Garrett at the Telephone Company.
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Martin Jr attended the Dallas wedding of Jewel Brooks and Howard Jones. The Martins served alongside Jones in the same military unit, highlighting a shared service connection.
