The News Editor photographed Herman Husfeld's well kept Lindale area farm six miles from Bowie. The Keifer pear trees in full bloom are more than sixty years old, planted by Husfeld's father the late Henry Husfeld, a pioneer settler, reflecting long standing Montague county interest in orchards and vineyards.
The Evans Motor Company in Bowie and Ford Sales and Service closed in memory of Henry Ford who died Monday at 84 in Dearborn Michigan. Ford, inventor and founder of the Ford empire, left a personal fortune around 200 million with a vast industrial impact. Funeral services were held in Detroit with burial beside his parents.
Veterans of Foreign Wars officials announce the local post will sponsor free placement of wheel chairs temporarily among residents of Montague County through the sale of publications. Chair availability is expected soon as national representatives plan visits to explain the proposition to potential subscribers.
Jimerson opened Tip's Milk Bar in his building behind First National Bank on Saturday and enjoyed a splendid first day. He remodeled the front and added improvements and plans to specialize in ice cream malted milk shakes fresh fruit drinks sandwiches and hamburgers plus retail fresh milk and cream.
Sophomore Leta Francis Beene of Baylor University returns home Sunday to visit her parents Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Beene.
A report notes a death due to cerebral hemorrhage occurring after a collapse, with details indicating the timing and cause of death within two hours.
Irvin Goodspeed of Bowie is indicted for the death of Marlin Camp near Bowie. He was arraigned by Sheriff Buck Jameson before District Judge Lewis Holland at Montague. The case was moved on Judge Holland's initiative to Archer County for trial, set for Wednesday April 16. Goodspeed is held in Wichita Falls jail with Mark Kramer of Dallas as his attorney. Marvin London leads the state's case, assisted by C. C. McDonald and O. M. Wylie.
Terrell Redman an 18 month old of Sunset died after swallowing kerosene in the yard. Immediate rescue efforts included pneumonia development and use of an iron lung from Lions Club sponsorship. Funeral held at Owens-Brumley Chapel with interment at Elmwood Cemetery. survivors include grandparents in Bowie and Sunset.
Bowie Rotary Club members chose six new directors: Fred L. Raborn Clarence Newsome W A Randolph JoAlan Spears H L Turns and Jones Robinson. Claud Stom spoke on wartime experiences as a prisoner of the Japs including capture in the Philippines and later captivity in Manchuria.
Rev. F. M. Talbot led a week of evangelistic services at First Methodist Church ending Sunday with a record crowd. The auditorium was filled and Easter music highlighted the event. Six infants were christened during the services.
A guide by A. A. Randolph urges fruit growers to start spraying to combat curcuio weevils and fungus. It details a four to five spray schedule using zinc sulphate lime wettable sulphur and lead arsenate, with timing tied to blossom shed and fruit development, and notes avoid lead arsenate in the month before ripe.
There is strong interest in the three act comedy Shoot the Works to be presented in the high school auditorium next Tuesday night April 15 under the direction of the Speech Class. Tickets are selling rapidly and the program will also feature music numbers with specials by the Powie band orchestra.
In Bowie, Curtis Latham JoAlan Spears and Clarence Newsom won the school board seats, defeating G Dee Jackson and keeping old members Posey Ratliff Daley and Pickett. Latham, Spears, and Newsom, all veterans of World War I, replace none.
The V F W Reddy McClellan Post 8789 sponsors this year’s softball league. Four teams Conoco V F W Nu Enamel and Lions have signed up, with others invited to apply before end of April. Contact William V Scott at the Post Office for info and applications.
Colin Smith from Sydney Australia will be the speaker at the Bowie Church of Christ Sunday morning April 13. Smith has served as a missionary for several years and is touring the United States to discuss his work in Australia. The public is invited to attend.
The Bowie telephone exchange joined a nationwide strike affecting thousands of cities. No picketing seen locally. patrons will have their bills prorated during the shutdown and phones free of charge. Union seeks higher starting wages and a four year path to raises as demands tally high costs for the company.
The city passes a meat inspection ordinance requiring a city or U.S. Department of Agriculture meat inspection mark on all cattle calf sheep swine or goat sold within Bowie. It also sets required slaughtering premises standards and fly and contamination controls. A State Health official approved the measure with no changes suggested.
No additional poisonings were reported this week after a child, a cow, and more than 200 dogs died from strychnine laid over a wide area. Loyd Throckmorton is recovering at home with his parents D. M. and Mrs. Throckmorton. No arrests have been made. public sentiment runs high against unknown perpetrators.
Mrs Artie Lane and her daughter Artie Sue have been visiting friends and relatives in San Angelo for the past month and returned home on Friday They will leave on Wednesday for several weeks in Mineral Wells for a stay with relatives and friends.
