AvavstA Me September 3 The widow of Lot Morrill Maine statesman, Charlotte Morrill, reveals she received an Ohio appeal urging her late husband to aid James G Blaine. She counters the request, recalling Morrill’s honor and warning that Blaine’s nomination corrupts the Republican Party.
A Augusta dispatch reports Mrs Lot Morrill replying to questions about her published letter attacking Mr Blaine and praising Messrs Pitt Fessenden and Morrill. She asserts the Herald piece is correct in every respect and recounts reactions from readers and public figures amid partisan controversy.
It was not known here until today that the man Brown who sent the foolish invitation to the late Lot M Morrill of Maine is actually the chairman of the Ontario Republican State Central Committee. Republicans here could not believe it at first but are now convinced and swear at the fool vigorously.
London reports reveal the yacht Mignonette sank near the Indian Ocean on May 19. Captain Dudley and two seamen survived four weeks in a dinghy, cannibalizing Parker the cabin boy to endure. They were later arrested for murder and remanded after magistrate hearing.
Bangor reports a brutal knife fight at Edward Fox's home near Ashland Portage Lake. John Fraser and Welch, both intoxicated, attacked Fox and his son. Fraser and Fox clashed with knives, leaving Fox severely cut and frazer wounded. The scene drew in Walter McGowan and two laborers to intervene.
Stonecutters in Joliet protest cutting fine cut stone from Will county house at penitentiary. Contractors pay 76 cents daily. citizen labor would cost 360. Major McFarland of the corps of engineers requests 1,381,000 for Connecticut in the 1886 river and harbor improvements. The funds include 450,000 for a canal around rapids at Enfield and 600,000 for a breakwater at New Haven.
A Trepassey despatch reports a southeast gale on Monday, an unknown black vessel with blue mast heads and a blue hull streak vanished with all hands near the western bend of St Shotts. Seven bodies washed ashore.
Madrid papers denounce French moves in Morocco aimed at rectifying eastern frontiers. They claim Blondel and the shereef of Wazan visited Ainhamra to stir rebellion and push French frontier lines toward the Malaya river and Figuig Oasis, threatening Spanish interests and caravan routes to Fez.
FRANK YORT reports that German car tanks carrying Russian petroleum arrived at Grandenz near the Russian frontier. The new transport method reportedly lowers Russian petroleum cost in Berlin by twenty five cents per fifty kilos versus American fuel. At Eydtkrehmen Caucasian petroleum springs bought ten acres along the rail, erecting large facilities as two hundred car tanks are in use.
News from Paris and London report a Chinese force of 100000 marching on French garrisons, with 6000 French troops in Tonquin towns. Three Chinese armies from Kwang-Si Yun-Nan and Kwang-Tung move toward Tonquin, Lao Kai, and Bac Ninh, aiming to strike at Hung Hoa and Hanoi while Shanghai and Woo Sung ports face blockades. France plans to deploy all marines and 7000 troops to China.
A Shanghai despatch reports China apologizes to the English admiral for the Foochow incident in which Chinese authorities fired on the British ironclad Zephyr. The foreign minister grieves the affair and offers indemnity to wounded officers and sailors. The British admiral accepts, attributing the firing to an officer’s ignorance of flags.
A massive riot in Brussels stems from protests against a priest education bill. Liberal supporters clash with clericals, thousands on each side, cavalry charges, and extensive arrests. At least three dead and 50 wounded reported, with 185 total arrests as the night ends and tension remains high.
London Sept 6 Earl Spencer lord lieutenant of Ireland warned the Limerick town council to levy a rate for extra police duty within a month or face strict enforcement. A called meeting rejected the demand and a committee was set to craft a reply. If resistance continues arrests and imprisonment of council members are expected.
London reports the Gordon relief expedition, a few thousand English troops, cannot be transported in large numbers up the river. If moved to Debbah it would be stranded, and a march from Debbah to Khartoum seems impossible. Unless Gordon breaks through around Khartoum, Wolseley could be forced to abandon the venture due to provisioning and health risks. Also a note on the disgraceful handling of an American clergyman's effects. Madrid reports an American clergyman and his two daughters arriving from Gan Sebastian after a month in Italy.
In Spain a father died of heart disease after being attacked while a priest’s belongings were burned by authorities who claimed cholera. Daughters filed complaints with the Madrid authorities seeking damages, decrying the action as disgraceful. Separately, dispatches from Constantinople report alarm over Arab revolt in El Hejaz with 8,000 troops sent and 8,000 more Arabs said to prep for Yemen, amid Mecca and Sana tensions. In Rome, Civita Vecchia residents attempted to burn a Naples railway to prevent cholera spread. troops halted the effort and four leaders were arrested.
In Warsaw sixty four suspected plotters against the Czar were arrested including women. Night closures of warehouses shops and taverns were ordered during the Czar’s visit and each police agent is to watch five houses.
A New York Sun report from London on September 6 describes a new party forming to regulate Ireland's politics. It would be a home rule group loyal to the English crown, creating an Irish Parliament in Dublin with Irish peers in the Lords and elected Commons. Members would swear allegiance to the Queen, and the parliament would handle provincial administrative matters.
Ex congressman John V. Lemoyne of Chicago will testify in the Blaine Sentinel libel suit. A former classmate of Blaine at Washington College, Penn, Lemoyne also witnessed the Blaine Stanwood wedding in Pittsburg on March 29, 1851. A Democrat opposed to Blaine, his statement is expected to cause nationwide sensation.
Indianapolis report notes attorneys for the Sentinel filed their answer to Blaine's libel complaint. The document asserts justification of seduction charges and that all article statements are true. It asks the court to compel Blaine to answer numerous interrogatories.
Thirty nine members of the Western Pig Iron Association report no solid unanimous backing for a united action to bank furnaces along the line. Respondents show many furnaces oppose fixed schemes yet favor restriction with flexibility on timing and method. The plan is not abandoned but seeks a latitude to achieve restraint and improve prices through renewed consultation.
Fremont Neb September 4 The sixth annual G A R Nebraska reunion opened with a sham battle on the grandstand drawing 3000 spectators. The platform collapsed sending everyone to the ground. Thirty injured several seriously including W 8 Abbott of Lincoln who had both legs crushed. He and two unknown women likely dead. About a dozen physicians attend the patients.
The Eastern Montana Live Stock Association annual meeting in Miles City elected 25 new members raising total to 108. L. J. Bryant named president, Joseph Scott vice president, Cap Harmon secretary treasurer. Delegates chosen for the St Louis convention. members own 40,000 cattle with $40,000,000 capital. Mrs Leslie to Manage the Continent Magazine in New York. Tourgee remains editor.
Maine dispatches report a heavy poll with Republicans gaining about ten percent across heard sections. Blaine claims Robie leads by roughly 12,000, with statewide totals forecast around 78,000 to 80,000 for Robie and 63,000 to 65,000 for the Democrats. Redman is noted as Democratic candidate for governor. Lower-level results show Robie 23,304 in 53 towns and Redman 15,879, compared with last year’s Republican 20,757 and Democratic 16,426.
Be and his son did not vote on the amendment at AvuGusTA. Blaine voted after women left the polls and refused to vote for or against the measure. He and Walker dodged the amendment while ward officials and the warden noted the name. Indications point to a large Republican majority in the city.
In Portland the September 8 vote surprised all parties with Robie leading 784 to 600 plurality amid many split tickets. WCTU women handed out Yes ballots and bouquets at the polls while liquor interests backed Robie and Reed. A Ward 7 drunken dispute followed polls closing as Greenbacker Todd praised Eaton Cleaves in a mixed ticket scene.
Blaine asserts at 7 p.m. that the state leans Republican by 12,000 and Reed's election gains a large margin, though he withholds exact totals. Official returns from Bangor show a 112 vote gain for Republicans while Lewiston records a 260 vote loss, as of September 8.

Elder Linton escaped while Elder Fuller was seized and severely beaten. R B R Church, a leading Mormon proselyte, died from a nervous shock after murders and threats to leave. All elders have departed Lewis County.
Kingston society is stirred by the disappearance of Miss Enphemia Munro heiress daughter of a wealthy citizen who was to wed Rev A Gray of Wallace Nova Scotia. She fled after sending letters to her father and fiancé declaring she could not marry him. Gray and Mr Munro chased to Toronto. no trace of her found. A $400 purse was raised for his wedding trip. A former lover in Hamilton may have renewed vows on the news of the marriage.
Hon. Charles J. Folger, secretary of the treasury, died at his Geneva home at 4 45 this afternoon after weeks of overwork. A Geneva native, he rose from local law practice to Ontario County judge, State Senator, New York Court of Appeals justice, and finally U S secretary of the treasury appointed by President Arthur. His 1882 gubernatorial race loss to Grover Cleveland remains a notable political episode.
In Cleveland on September 3, Sergeants Brainard and Long and Private Connell of the Greeley Arctic expedition deny a Washington telegram claiming the survivors were split into two parties. They insist the party was not divided and describe Brainard as capable and in command, with only Henry reported shot. Brainard and Long deny any strongest claim and call the officer a slanderer, asserting Brainard was not on the Bear and did not reach as the strongest.
New York reports the Association of Dealers and Manufacturers in plumbing materials issuing a circular to architects nationwide. It accompanies recent correspondence with the Master Plumbers' Association and their joint resolutions. Dealers claim the master plumbers demands are unbusinesslike and outrageous and urge architects to defend dealers' interests against a rising trades union influence.
Miss Catharine Fross of Axton Illinois died after a catfish horn pierced her palm six weeks earlier. Doctors amputated the arm but blood poisoning followed. She succumbed yesterday after the long illness.
A massive blaze in Cleveland destroys 65 acres between the Cuyahoga river and Scranton avenue, with a total loss estimated at 2.5 million dollars and only about 600 thousand covered by insurance. The fire heavily damages Woods Perry & Co and Variety Iron Works, delays rail travel, and claims several injuries and one death. Firefighters from multiple cities battled the flames as embers swept across roofs and telegraph lines, with horses among the casualties and emergency crews working through the night.
In Taunton on September 6 a Superior Court jury found Edward O'Brien's suit for damages against Diamond Match Company of Norton for the loss of a hand while employed by the defendant. The plaintiff is awarded 87900 dollars.
