President to travel to Long Branch with Drs Agnew Bliss Woodward and Boynton Mrs Garfield Mollie Colonel Rockwell C O Rockwell and Mr Brown Mrs Edson. Train leaves Washington early with limited stops and no press access. President will use a private private car and water mattress for comfort during the trip.

White Mountain Apaches, about 800 strong, threaten renewed hostilities aided by a medicine man’s prophecies and a pending harvest rise. Reports say Pedro’s band killed travelers near Camp Thomas while cavalry and scouts march toward Fort Apache.
In Warrenton area near the Blue Ridge two young lawyers James Scott and Robert R. Campbell dueled at ten paces after years of political feuding. A rapid pistol exchange left Scott wounded in the left hand as Hunter blocked further shots, ending the confrontation. Both men are noted scions of prominent Virginia families and this is said to be the first duel in the area since the war.
A railroad train struck the new exposition building in Atlanta causing collapse of one side and an estimated damage of $60,000. The incident occurred on September 5 with no further details on injuries.
Bradstreets telegraph reports from 45 centers in the United States Canada and the provinces show general prosperity in trade and industry over the past eight months. Failures totaled 118 with a wide distribution. the largest was Wolf Mayer & Co Philadelphia owing over 150000, much of it to New York City merchants.

Half a million in misappropriated funds tied to ex Signal Service officer Howgate. Bondsmen failed to secure the case as government seized real estate and over $100,000 more. Howgate reportedly escaped to Canada with his mistress, taking about $22,000 in cash and selling valuables. His wife and family left destitute.
Washington, Sept 5 The Star route ring faces indictment for Post Office frauds as the government presses forward despite the President’s illness. Attorney General and Postmaster General have gathered substantial evidence to indict Brady, Dorsey, McGrew, and others. grand jury to meet in about a week.
Quebec September 5 reports reveal brutal abuse of the Star of England crew by Captain Parsons and Chief Mate Moore. An abused able seaman died of heart disease after torture including thumbs, mouth pinning, and beating. Moore was captured. Johnson corroborated. Captain Parsons sought in London.
Richmond Va September 6 Another claimant against Marvin alias General Morton now in jail for bigamy and forgery testifies as the fifteenth person betrayed into a marriage. A Dayton Ohio minister sends a letter recounting Marvin posing as Lieutenant Governor Miller and marrying a governess who later deserted her in New York City after two weeks. Many will rejoice that the scoundrel has been caught.
The Republican State Committee met with 31 present under Platt as chair. NYC was chosen as the site for the next State Convention on October 5, with the existing apportionment rule retained, granting each assembly district one delegate and an extra for every 1500 votes over half that amount from the last election.
Reported shifts raise total delegates from 454 to 495 and New York from 65 to 7 as the convention adjourns at 1.80. A committee will meet October 5 to pick a ball for the convention, while city Republican strength is seen as central to securing national delegates. Rumors hint at a Stalwart Tammany alliance to boost Republican turnout and curb Democratic gains.
Henry C Neal of Troy Tan grocer’s clerk went on a naked shooting spree Friday forenoon wounding six people. He killed two, wounded four, then fought police at a freight depot before being captured. Victims include a night watchman, a colored man, and two others. Recovery outlook poor for several.
Two rival steamers the American Rothesay and the Canadian Royal Mail Spartan raced from Ogdensburg toward Montreal. In the swift current they touched paddle boxes and ran four miles locked together through the rapids, until the Rothesay’s wheels stalled and she beached at Morrisburg.
A destitute Irishman Thomas McDermott allegedly left a fortune of 7.85 million dollars to his former employer on his deathbed after a chain of claims from England. The employer and his wife stand to receive the estate, with probate expected soon. Speculators offer up to half a million for the windfall, but the mechanic declines.
In Lake City Florida a group of six to seven men tried to free Miss Hansome Keen from W A Hardy after Hardy guarded her for a court investigation on infant murder charges. Shots were fired injuring Hardy and Bunyan Hardy a five year old. A negro man Alfred was wounded and Mrs Hardy protected Keen as attackers fled. Deputy Bethea organized a posse and arrests followed.
In Doupevere Iowa on September 5 a farmer’s family teeters on collapse as grief drives Mary Mc Mahon the daughter into a convent asylum where she goes insane. The mother, visiting the asylum, also succumbs to insanity. The daughter’s death last Monday completes the tragedy as the mother dies soon after. A son and daughter lose reason at the sight of their mother and sister returning dead and the father nears a breakdown from grief.
Despatches from cotton country report Georgia at one-half to two-thirds average Mississippi three-fourths usual crop Alabama similar to last year Louisiana light crop Florida and Texas light but good quality Arkansas about half the average crop report from New Orleans dated September 5.
Miss Carrie Brewer daughter of Gardner Brewer of Boston gives 400 to the Channing Memorial Church and pays 100 for ten fair tickets. Cornelius Vanderbilt and James Gordon Bennett also subscribe generously.
