In Washington May 22 reports say the House deadlock will last through the week as Republicans seek a quorum with Greenbackers and Mahones. Democrats vow to oppose each step while party leaders scramble to bring absentees back and keep business moving. The government plans to proceed with Sanderson, a Star route contractor, as a witness against the Ting after a grand jury failed to indict him. Sanderson was originally charged but not arraigned, and Merrick, the government's counsel, says the defense will have time to review the new indictment before trial, which is slated to begin before June 1 with witnesses ready.

In Newport a 78 year old widow, Mrs William Vose, died by suicide after family troubles. her body was found near the cliffs after being seen wandering the beach.
A Hatch & Co. horse and express wagon ran away from Pearl street station last evening. A Bliss & Nye store saw the alarm sent by telephone to John P. Taylor's corner Acushnet and Bedford. Edward W. Brown of Taylor's jumped aboard and seized the reins to halt the horse near Acushnet and Union.
A postal card threatening the President's assassination by the Fenians was dropped in the New York city post office yesterday. Clerks are much excited as authorities investigate the anonymous message and demand action to recall Minister Lowell.
Miss Abbie Taylor who died this week wrote the invitations to her own funeral while under nurse and physician care. Her life intertwined with Captain John C. Phillips whom she cared for during his illness. after his death she remained devoted to his memory, aiding the poor and invalids in Newport. She left most property to her nephew John Taylor of Asbury Park.
At Harrisburg a Greenback Convention with eighty three delegates protested Congress over mortgage spending for a new twenty year term to national banks. Officers named include EB Colton as chairman and John Welch, F H Windle as vice presidents. The platform calls for government issuance of currency, state control of monopolies, land reform, tariff revision, and pension justice for Civil War veterans. Committees were formed to organize, and the convention adjourned sine die.
A man freed from the house of correction last week sought police help to recover an overcoat his lawyer allegedly took as security for a $6 legal fee. The lawyer, a temperance advocate, kept the coat and refused to return it when offered $5.
Rev. J. Weaver of Montville refused to marry a couple with Norwich issued license outside town. He crossed the municipal line about forty rods to perform the ceremony, defying the license placement rule in the contested area.
A Norwich groom and his bride wed outdoors under a protecting umbrella carried by his daughter. They stood beneath the dome as a drenching shower settled around them. The couple, married in the rain, drove away pleased as if the ceremony had occurred in a fashionable parlor rather than outside.
A farm hand found Dr A W Kendall of Syracuse alive beside a graveyard near the county poorhouse. A revolver, two shovels, a satchel, and a grave robbing kit were found near him. Kendall, a young physician, had supplied bodies for medical colleges but had recent disputes and may have been shot by a protection group amid grave desecration fears.
The whaling schooner Harry Wetmore reports a squadron of twenty one ships iced in northwest of Cape Ray. Two large steamers and several other vessels are driven onto shores and cliffs. A large ship rests atop a cliff above the sea. Crew fate unclear. Other craft struggle in heavy ice from Magdalen to Birds Rocks.
In East Machias Maine on May 22 Daniel Huntley a married man aged 30 died in a house fire after a lamp exploded while he carried it upstairs. His wife and two children fled outside as flames enveloped the building and its contents were uninsured.
Reports from Eaton town Dealbeach Upper Freehold Farmingdale Asbury Park and Manasquan say residents fell ill after consuming arsenic poisoned coffee from the wrecked steamship Pliny. The Asbury Park mayor ordered a town hall bulletin warning against the coffee as a Newark or Boston dealers reportedly bought and distributed it to farmers and their pigs became violently ill.
A May cyclone in River County in southwestern Arkansas destroyed farm buildings and timber, blowing down fences and trees. W C laughter, Nathan Ward, John Blastengane, Michael Norris, Zeke Fuller, and Martin Teel’s properties suffered extensive damage. Teel’s wagon and Ring Herring’s house were destroyed. some residents, including a family, were crippled but no lives were confirmed lost. The storm was strongest in Sevier County.
In Naugatuck Connecticut Miss Sarah Roswell intervened when arbutus hunters rousted a giant rattlesnake. She handed a revolver to a hunter, then reclaimed it and fired four shells into the snake's neck. She finished the adversary with a club, earning a necklace of nine rattles as a trophy.
Two hundred masked men abducted Joseph E. Jenkins from St Martinsville jail and hanged him to a tree at the murder site. En route they encountered a black man named Azar accused of murder and also hanged him to the same tree. The Governor offered a 2000 dollar reward for any arrest of the lynchers.
James Ferguson of Albany known as the Steeple Jack contracted to gild the cross and paint St Bernard's Church in Fitchburg without a platform. He uses a block and tackle fastened at the base to ascend and descend. He has painted numerous steeples using ropes and his tackle.
In Dallas on May 22 a Corsicana German shoemaker, son and heir to Cornelius Vanderbilt, has abandoned his loss and gone to New York to urge his claims. The German craftsman is described as a disciple of St. Crispin and seeks recognition of his familial rights.
The District of Columbia court in banc upholds the lower court ruling and refuses a new trial for Guiteau. It affirms the murder occurred where struck, preserves US jurisdiction over DC, and fixes execution arrangements with restricted spectator access. Guiteau's counsel vows further steps.

By order of Postmaster General Howe letters with unpaid postage will not be forwarded to the dead letter office after July 1. The mailing office postmaster will notify the addressee by card that such letters exist and forward once postage is paid. Postmaster Tobey introduced this in Boston last November and over 10,000 letters have been processed this way.
