A devastating tornado and hurricane sweep through Kansas City and surrounding states. Kansas City suffered widespread ruin with the courthouse roof torn off, factories wrecked, and the Lathrop school site hard hit. casualties include multiple children and dozens injured, with rail lines and telegraph links broken and extensive property damage across Missouri, Kansas, and nearby towns.
A Chicago express on the Fort Wayne line battled a tornado through eastern Ohio on Friday night as lightning raked the cars near Kirby. Windows shattered, a tree struck the locomotive, a passenger from Canton lost an eye, and many sustained minor cuts while the train halted briefly before resuming to Crestline.
A Wednesday night storm wrecked Tipton and nearby Uriah Gates, destroying fair grounds and many private homes. Marsh Tucker died in the disaster and Uriah Gates residence was leveled. Fire and rescue teams battled the aftermath as residents assessed the damage and sought safety.

A rapid series of hurricanes struck Missouri Indiana Ohio and Kansas starting on the 11th causing widespread devastation. In Selina Oregon two dozen killed and many buildings destroyed while Carey Wyandotte county saw six dead from a collapsing house. Meriden Port land county Kansas endured extensive ruin with homes lifted and injuries reported. Portland Indiana suffered a cyclone that wrecked houses barns and fences with several deaths and many homeless. The tornado track was wide and damages reached thousands of dollars.
The Gloucester fishing schooner David J. Adams seizure sits with lawyers as the Admiralty Court of the Dominion will hear claims. US consul general at Halifax Mr Phelan has sent depositions to Washington. Maine Senator Frye pushes retaliatory shipping measures while Canadian officials defend the seizure. The Lansdowne crew dispute the covering of the ship’s name and assert rights.
Portland reports the fishing schooner Ella M. Doughty owned by Warren Doughty was seized by the Canadian government at Englishtown for buying bait under a permit deemed invalid. Sargent Lord & Skillin of Portland seek State Department guidance and possible bonding of the vessel as officials coordinate with Secretary Bayard and Senator Frye amid local actions by the Portland Fishing Exchange.
John Chesley Perkins a 56 year old Pittsfield resident was found dead in his bed with his throat cut from ear to ear a half tumbler of Paris green at his bedside and a razor at the foot of the bed blond hair on the floor and walls. He had been drinking heavily of late and lived alone.
Fargo report details John Cowdright a farmer from Inkster who traveled to Pennsylvania to marry a woman of 30 and brought her to Dakota. They stayed at a Fargo hotel where at night he stole her baggage and about 4000 dollars then left by train. Ottawa reports fifty deaths from smallpox at St Denis Quebec with students among the victims and local towns resisting sanitation measures.
Evangeline Dent, 12, daughter of carpenter Thomas Dent of 438 Linden Street, New Haven, died after a fright caused by a dog that chased and snapped at her. The dog did not bite, but the fear triggered fatal hemorrhage, as reported May 14.
Ernest Bechter, an insane inmate at the Prrnsperra city poor farm, was found dead in his room with five ribs broken. Death could be from murder by keepers or other inmates or from coexisting illness. This marks the second fatal beating of an insane patient at the same institution within two weeks.
In a Senate open to debate on interstate commerce, Senator Frye of Maine introduced a bill to limit foreign commercial privileges in U S ports in response to the seizure of the Gloucester fishing schooner David J Adams by Canadian authorities. West Virginia sees a surge of claim and pension agents who lure veterans and widows with high back pensions. Agents arrest for skimming funds as Special Agent A N Roome pursues cases in Roane County and beyond. One lawyer, W H Justice, kept 1200 of 1240 owed to a veteran and returned 40 to the needy. Additional prosecutions expected.
Police called to the Gault House, Chicago, on May 16 arrest Dr. Ransom and his 19 year old daughter, both sounding insane. The doctor, once caring for his daughter after a New York burglary, raved that burglars pursued them. Police found the man hiding under a bed and the daughter shredding bedding. They were taken to the county hospital.
In St Louis on May 15 the Criminal Court advanced juror selection for Maxwell murder trial. The panel of forty seven was seated and ready. On Tuesday morning the work of selecting a twelve member trial jury from these jurors will continue.
The home rule issue dominates debate in the House of Commons amid warnings of upheaval. Loyalists arm in Ulster while Nationalists threaten, with figures suggesting Irish regiments and British troops could face a clash. Discussions of a possible dissolution and appeal to the country intensify as factions clash over Ulster autonomy and imperial governance.
Washington May 14 The Senate finance committee via Mr Miller has reverted a bill to allow ex president Chester A Arthur a credit of 88436 838 in settling his accounts as collector of the port of New York. The action aims to adjust historical financial settlements tied to his former post.
In New York at month end January 1871 a shortage of 5000 was found and not explained. A subsequent discrepancy of 343,688 dollars appeared in the accounts of 8. G. Ogden, who had long served as auditor of the collector's office and is now deceased.

In New York a middle aged woman with wild eyes fled a cottage near Inwood station and leapt into the Hudson. Leona Kennedy, said to be insane, dragged her 72 year old father into the water as he chased to save her. Both bodies were recovered about ninety minutes later. The daughter was to be moved to Bloomingdale asylum last night.
Preeze Oak May 17 Sioux Indians were interviewed on the Dawes bill. The tract of land totaling 7,000,000 acres is controlled by seven chiefs who guide policy. A May 3 council at Spotted Tail's camp included Hump Four Bear Swift Bird and Charmer. They spoke of weariness of war and willingness to ceded land if the white father approves.
Information from Huachuca reports Captain Hatfield engaged Geronimo’s band for an hour. Two of Hatfield’s men were killed and three wounded. Casualty figures for the Indians are unspecified. Included in the party are General Miles Captain Bebo Lieutenants Davis Governor Torres of Sonora and Refrect Rivero of Magdalena district. Governor Torres relayed news that General Martinez routed the Yaquis from Sierra Heraclo on the 13th with 100 killed and 200 captured. Mexicans suffered 20 killed and 60 wounded. Cajeme escaped, ending the Yaqui war.
In New York on May 15, Cuban ex-employee William G. Adams disguise with wig and stained face assaults assistant cashier Edward Hammond at Sweetzer Pembroke & Co. vault area. Chloroform used, Hammond wounded, Adams captured. Hammond sent to hospital. Adams, 24, led to believe $1500 in safe to pay clerk. Also notes Chicago blizzard damage threatens crops and fruit loss, including coleus foliage stripped.
A night incident near St. Louis reports an attempt to burn the East St. Louis approach to the bridge. A watchman spotted a large section soaked with a gasoline mixture near the nearly mile-long approach at 9 o clock, trains were halted and crews scrubbed the area.
The Portia Express reports a startling local mystery a deceased minister may have walked among the living or an unknown figure resembled him. A son encountered a man on Congress Street near the Frat Parish Church believing him to be his father in life. The paper offers no conclusions, promising deeper investigation and names withheld for now.
West End, Atlanta May 16 A town marshal shot and killed Hon Frank P Gray a prominent lawyer and wealth holder after a street car dispute and a confrontation on Gordons Street Gray drew a pistol and was killed The marshal Jones then attempted suicide and wounded himself before being jailed at Fulton County jail
The Pennsylvania Railroad directors voted to issue 4 million dollars of new stock to fund construction and equipment for 1886. Planned spend includes 600k on construction, 400k on real estate, 800k on locomotives and passenger gear, 700k on new branches, and 1.6 million on ongoing auxiliary lines. Shareholders may subscribe at par from June 15 to 30, 1888, at 4 percent. The total company capital would rise to about 8?0 million.
Cutcaco May 6 The proposed tax on butterine sparks Western protests as butter makers and merchants from Chicago Milwaukee Kansas City Toledo Cincinnati and other boards of trade oppose the legislation. P D Armour says Eastern producers expect the tax but Western interests will resist. Commercial exchanges and merchant associations echo the demand for fair treatment.

A party of government officials congressmen and journalists left Washington this morning for a visit to Antietam Maryland. The group will be away for a couple of days.
