Week in Congress shows sharp clash over free silver policy
The Senate debated tax reciprocity with Colombia and the public land relief bill, while the House wrangled over silver currency and pensions. Bland led the anti silver faction, Williams and Tracey pressed hard for hard money, and Mills was elected senator from Texas. The Indian affairs debate lingered in the Senate as executive sessions closed the day.

Vestry Billiard Table Highlight of Hampstead Church Rooms
A Hampstead church vestry near Mr. Robert F. Horton’s church houses three rooms. One holds an oil Madonna painting, another engravings from Frith titled Road to Ruin, and a billiard table is tucked among the coins. Fifty years ago such art and amusement would be seen as fitting church life, yet today pews and puritanism clash with spirit stores in nearby vaults.
