Captain Andrew M. Hitchcock known as Captain Kneely died Wednesday in Brooklyn from Bright's disease. The aged master, born in West Troy, commanded steam boats on the Hudson from 1808 onward, serving long years on the river. He will be interred in Albany.
Michael McCaffrey, from Bartington Vermont, is to stand trial in Washington County Court at Montpelier for the first degree murder of his wife and his blind mother in law. The double killing occurred March 11 after years of suspected insanity, with the accused detailing the atrocity to jurors while his trial set for March 27.

Postmaster General Howe dies at Madison with telegram announcement to his son Frank Howe and son in law Colonel Totten. Timothy O Howe, born Livermore Missouri February 24 1816, had early law career in Readfield Green Bay and Milwaukee. He served in Wisconsin politics as Whig and later Republican, advocating emancipation and territorial governments in the South, and opposed President Johnson policy. His life included service in the Wisconsin Legislature and U.S. Senate with influential committees.
Washington March 23 There has been correspondence between the British minister and the secretary of state regarding sympathy for the Irish in America and the attempts of extremists to use dynamite. Officials decline to discuss the matter, but it is believed friendly offices will be used to detect schemes against British authority by American citizens.
In Philadelphia a coroner's inquest reports a Belgium family of eight, Francis Nichotte and wife with six children, arriving after crossing the Atlantic. The nine month old, Lewis, died of dysentery, Adele, three, died shortly after hospital care, both en route from Brussels aboard the Waesland. The parents, left with sixty cents, received aid to reach Minnesota, lamenting lack of medical care and nourishment aboard.

Princeton March 24 Hon. J W Bryant last surviving brother of William Cullen Bryant was likely fatally injured when a scaffold collapsed on him a man at work. An hour later his wife was thrown from a carriage with a broken collar bone and serious injuries. Her sister Mrs Elijah Dee was also hurt.
In Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania on March 26 work stopped at the Pine Ridge colliery of the Delaware and Hudson company due to feared roof collapse. Timbers in the main gangway show weakness and serious consequences are hourly expected.
In Chicago on March 24 John Dowling and Bill Martin, noted gamblers, exchanged twenty shots in a pre dawn duel. Mrs Hes ter Vanderlinde Brinckerhoff aged 101 years and 21 days died in New York. She leaves sixty one descendants and was a great granddaughter of Philip Peters Schuyler, founder and first governor of Albany. Her father was Colonel Adrian Brinckerhoff of revolutionary fame. She hosted grandchildren with recollections of Washington and Lafayette.
