International and domestic expressions of mourning pour in for General Grant. Queen Victoria, Prince and Princess of Wales, and leaders worldwide send condolences. In the United States, people and organizations display mourning symbols. in Boston about 1800 gathered at Faneuil Hall to pay respects.

After General Grant's death Mayor Grace of New York City offered a central Park burial in the city's name. The family, honoring Grants wish to be buried in New York, accepted the offer and the plan became formal. The decision concludes the private family choice with city officials aiding the arrangement.
