Mount McGregor July 31. A small notice marked that Grant’s remains were visitable during certain hours. Dr. Newman led a large party through the Balmoral to the cottage, guarded by a sentry. The body was viewed in the parlor by those entitled, amid reminiscences and reports. The funeral car on the excursion train drew mixed comment over its drapery and seats. General Jackson’s condition worsened, Dr. Douglas relieved, and Mrs. Grant’s requested report cited confusion about Confederate references.
The city readies for General Grant remains arriving next Tuesday with a 2000 troop military division, 2600 veterans, and 2000 civic and fraternal groups. The route loops from State Street to Capitol, catafalque setup in the Senate vestibule, and guards to manage crowds. Pallbearers travel in eight carriages from Mount McGregor as officials arrange sleeping quarters for 2000 troops and the Albany Fire Department lines Pearl Street during the pageant.

Ex-Secretary Benjamin Bristow William Richards and ex-Postmaster General James Tyner accept invitation alongside Grant’s cabinet officers.

A crowded New York scene surrounds the unfinished temporary tomb for General Grant. Workmen set a 40 by 40 feet square, with park police clearing crowds. The tomb should be completed by Wednesday night and a guard added Thursday, while visitors and nearing crowds threaten the park and nearby landmark Claremont House.

Buker Ga July 31 James Searcy came to the county three years ago and married Miss Eola Curtis. He showed affection for his thirteen year old sister in law, then disappeared with her after selling all possessions. It turns out Searcy has two wives in Alabama and is only 26 years old.

Columbus reports the death of Charles Neuville a convict sent from Toledo last December for seven years. The Polish born man with English and Russian noble lineage reportedly married fifteen women including a Detroit heiress daughter of Charles Whitney. He claimed one wife while revealing a Russian title. The warden was told his real name Neuville Censmieski and that his wife resides in Peterboro Ontario. The Whitney daughter had eloped with him to Toledo before the trial.
Virginia Democrats at Ricamond adjourned after naming General Fitzhugh Lee for governor Hon J E Massey for lieutenant governor and Rufus A Ayres for attorney general. The platform condemns new taxes opposes railroad favoritism supports public schools and abolishing internal revenue and endorses civil service reform and Cleveland administration.
A massive blaze began about midnight in a Toronto Sugar Refinery building on the Esplanade. Driven by east wind, flames spread across five to six blocks, destroying boat builders, lumber firms, boiler makers, and other structures to Yonge Street. By 4 30 a m the fire was under control. losses and insurance figures were not yet known.
A dispatch from Lewiston Idaho reports fighting among the Nez Perces on the Clearwater threatening a tribal outbreak. Nine Indians were killed yesterday by Nez Perces who recently returned from the Indian Territory, creating an uneasy mood as authorities have not yet sought military aid.
A Dakota Montana capitalist party intends to seek a Washington settlement to divide Dakota and Montana into four new political units. East of the Mississippi would become a single Dakota state, while west of the river and eastern Montana cow belt form a second. The western Montana mining region and Black Hills would join Wyoming. They express confidence due to ample funds.
The Regina court resumed the trial of Louis Riel for conspiracy and high treason. The jury returned a guilty verdict after deliberations, and Judge Richards pronounced a death sentence to be carried out on September 18. Riel remained calm, while the jury foreman wept.

The man, once involved in Washington sensationalism and later in temperance crusades, is described as a cautionary tale of in temperance.
Rear Admiral Franklin reports from Cherbourg that French authorities were impressed by American hospitality at the Bartholdi statue reception. He notes reciprocal efforts by the Pensacola crew to foster goodwill, believing the joint presence deepens friendship between France and the United States.
In Philadelphia on August 2 a loud squeal warned staff at the Continental Cafe. A large rat was found writhing with its tail caught in a clam shell, bitten by another clam, and a waiter killed the rat with a pick.
