Washington reports a crowded courtroom for the Guiteau murder trial with Judge Cox ordering the defendant toward the dock amid interruptions. Doctors testify on sanity, defense and prosecutors clash over transitory insanity and the need for orderly proceedings.
Washington December 31 The Gazette reports forthcoming testimony on treasury era and Northern Pacific charter forfeiture questions. It notes charges about Sherman era expenditures, treasury officials' relatives, and calls for an investigation into land grants and subsidies. Grand jury will hear Dorsey route fraud cases beginning January 21 with other indictments to follow.
The Garfield children fund in New York shows 361891.72 received and paid to the United States Trust Company. Separate totals include 611000 in registered bonds, 261670.75 cash balance, and 220.97 cash. General Garfield’s mother remittance totals 112265. United. Sixty years after a lovers quarrel parted them, Jonathan Brelsford and Elizabeth Kirby plan a nuptial shortly after the New Year in Zanesville Ohio. Kirby remained single while Brelsford, a widower, has great grand-daughters who are marriageable.
August Gottel, formerly a New York City banker, donated 62,000 dollars for Vienna theatre fire victims. He planned to attend the theatre that night but was delayed. He had recently won 80,000 dollars in the Imperial Austrian Lottery and after taxes realized 62,600 dollars to give away. <
Atlanta reports the closing exercises opened at 1 30 with a prayer by Bishop H W Warren of the Methodist Episcopal church. Letters of regret from several gentlemen were received after the opening.
New York December 31 Fitzgerald the world champion walker covers 682 miles in six days at the Ennis contest. He finishes with 582 miles after a week of competition, winning $1600 plus a silver cup valued at $200. Noremac takes second, Herty third, with Lacouse and Krohne also placing as the crowd cheers through the final laps.
Bradford Penn December 31 Aks John Mc Cleary a Roberts Company employee was near a Haymaker well when it flowed and hurled a nitro glycerine torpedo outward. He lost his coat tail and was cast about 100 feet but escaped with bruises. No bones broken and doctors expect a full recovery in two weeks. The derrick splintered and nearby windows shattered by the blast.
December report from Wasmyneton recounts Senator David Davis buying a newsboy a full outfit then hair wash and bath at the Capitol barber shop. He advised the boy kindly and sent him home with coin, a tale noted by a barber and later described as a recurring habit.
Philadelphia report says Colonel Henry McComb of Wilmington died after an apoplectic fit on Chestnut Street while en route to Newark for a Frelinghuysen dinner. He planned to see Wayne McVeagh and leaves a widow and four children, fortune estimated at 5 million dollars.
A Leader special from Wampum Pennsylvania reports six men were seriously injured when a premature dynamite blast occurred at a rock cut tied to the Pittsburg Youngstown and Chicago railroad work. The explosion was caused by workers using fire to thaw the dynamite.
New Orleans dispatch reports Mrs M F Coppege killed Wednesday when a four year old child playing with a pistol discharged it as she instructed him how to aim. The weapon was loaded and no one knew it was loaded.
A Los Angeles despatch reports Mrs. Cruse of Florence in Los Angeles county delivered six perfectly formed female children yesterday. It is claimed as the most remarkable case of its kind in the state. Another Jersey auditor’s note reports $39,000 deficiency found in Newton township Building and Loan Association accounts.
John H. Murray a renowned circus manager died in New York Tuesday at age 63. He began in the business at age 20 and built a prominent career in show management.
George Kinland toured South America and Europe in successive seasons. After Me Holland’s death, Murray joined George P. Mutehingen. He led Stone, Rosston & Co. in 1804, then Stone Rowston & Murray from 1866 to 1871, later Stone & Murray’s until 1872 when Dee Stone withdrew, making Murray sole proprietor through 1878. The act toured West Indies winters 1871 77 78 and performed at Globe Theatre Lent a circus in New York, with Stickney at the Siege of Paris building in Boston. He staged a pony circus at Harry Miner’s Theatre New York and ran the show nationwide. Murray gave up athletic feats in 1871.
The Clyde Line steamer West Point exploded while unloading kerosene at West Point on York River killing nineteen people, many laborers from Richmond and West Point. The cause remains uncertain with theories ranging from leaking oil to possible dynamite in freight. The vessel, new to service, carried 625 tons and was insured for $40,000 with a $66,000 value.
Mississippi dispatch reports the steamer Paris C Brown near White River mouth bursting a steam chest, leaving ten to fifteen passengers severely scalded. No fatalities reported as of the special Herald transmission from Vicksburg dated December 31.

At noon a dynamite explosion on the Pennsylvania company's new line near Beaver River at Wampum injured several workers. Wilford Cunningham died, John Burns, Samuel Parker, William Wood, Albert Boshell, Frank Shargnut, and two French laborers were hurt. Mr Kingsmith escaped unharmed.
Caiiaco December 31 Minnie Brooks alias Louisa Tinney once ran a Fourth avenue bagnio and recent reports say she joined the church and now uses the former den as a prayer meeting site. She has reportedly married her former barkeeper Giles W. Hunt from Alabama and seeks to convert him. The Evangelists react with horror while the reformer stays committed to vows and social progress.
In New York on December 31 two of the youngest travelers, Frank Macey age 7 and his brother Charles age 4, were sent from Castle Garden to Baltimore after arriving aboard the steamship England. The boys, neatly dressed and bright, said they had lived in England three years and could not say who took them there. They claimed to be English with an American father and knew nothing about their mother. They were to be forwarded to Quinn Macey of St. Margaret's.

Captains Pim Hull and Finn discussed survivors of the Jeannette expedition, the Lena coast, frost-bite risks, and the Russians planning an international station near the Lena while expecting to meet the Jeannette survivors en route to Europe.
One coasting steamer and two steamers in the Mediterranean trade are believed lost after the November gales. The probable loss of life totals 110, with the finding announced on Thursday in London.
Portland reports a train on the Boston and Maine line fell through an iron bridge at Kennebank this noon. Eight men were killed and several injured. Physicians have gone from Portland. A separate note describes a theft incident at Old Colony depot during Christmas week.
