The second assistant postmaster general’s report shows mail transportation costs for year ending June 30, 1881: railroads $11,613,368. steamboats $753,167. Star routes $6,057,355. total $19,423,800. Compared to last year, railroad routes rose and costs up $1,114,382. steamboats down $134,054. Star routes up 409 routes but down $564,144 in cost. Star service cost in 1851 was $6,957,355, a large decrease from 1880. The 1882 appropriation is $7,900,000, exceeding 1881 costs by $942,647. The estimate for Star service may be safely set at $7,250,000, down $650,000 from the prior year.

A Big Blast at Glendon Iron Company Quarry
Forty thousand tons of rock were displaced at the Glendon Iron Company quarry in Easton, Vermont, by a massive blast prepared for nearly a year.
