New York reports J C Yune received a China letter dated November 16 from Hoa Chung Kwong Tung. War broke out between Ko and Ja villages over land for an ancestral temple. The conflict left 500 dead and many wounded. The temple was destroyed and a wave of burning and pillaging followed across the neighboring townships.
Washington notes show the expected vote on revising the rules as a test of Rep Randall's leadership over the appropriations committee. Rep Collins and the Pennsylvania member influence many, with 42 Democrats among the vote. The House Democratic majority is 43, so Republican support could block measures from the free trade wing, as Randall did in Morrison's case, with backing from Democratic protectionists.
From St Louis December 20 reports say Acting Governor Sepulveda was freed from prison and an officer who ordered fire on Federal troops was acquitted. About twenty of Sepulveda’s privates were sentenced to ten years in the Fifth Battalion of Cavalry at Monterey. Governor Garcia received a grand Saltillo reception on return from the City of Mexico. Sepulveda and friends escorted him to Villa Garcia amid a welcome despite his downfall. A general revolution has occurred with leaders granted governmental sinecures.
Miss Mary Alice Brown a 25 year old boarding at 20 West Twenty seventh street fled to the Fifth Avenue hotel near Broad way declaring she had been held prisoner and escaped from a second story window. Insane she was taken to Bellevue Hospital and confined in the insane ward. Her father Anson T Brow once wealthy allied with A T L Stewart and later lost fortune. she supported herself as a portrait artist. She learned her fiancé was already married and since then has suffered insanity, raving about Mr Fish and claiming many signatories support her bid to free him from jail as she seeks help from various city figures. The case ends with her attempting to flee to the basement door of the boarding house.
A young woman seized by a man and chased to Broadway and Fifth Avenue. An officer stopped her near the Fifth Avenue Hotel. At 9 o'clock she was placed in a carriage and escorted to Bellevue, insisting only the officer accompany her. She asked to go to the home of Jesse Seligman. Her fiancé’s name remains undisclosed.
Richard Golden, popular comedian, inherits about £10,000 from a long-lost Irish will. James Dunn sheltered at the Golden home as a dispossessed deserter, later leaving his Irish property to Mr. Golden in a will found after years. The fortune valued near $50,000 will go to the son, who plans to visit Dublin to claim it.
Burra o December 12. Best Dickson, famed as a gilded youth, lived with his mother on Delaware avenue and was heir to Ham Best. He loved Ida Stiles of 934 Bury street, daughter of Patrolman Stiles. A raid at the Stiles residence led to arrests for allegedly being in a house and doing what they ought not, with Ida fined but appealing for conspiracy. Dickson reportedly wed Ida, a romance prompting police neglect and a sensational court case to follow.
David Whitmer a founder of the Mormon Church and longtime Richmond resident lies at the point of death. Born in 1805 in Pennsylvania he claimed to have seen the plates and aided in translation. He has owned the original manuscript and opposed polygamy.
In Canton Ohio on December 17 miner George Pile and others living in a deserted church as a dwelling watched two kegs of blasting powder dry when one keg fractured. A match ignited loose powder causing a massive explosion that wrecked the building and trapped women and children, who were rescued. Pile suffered severe burns but survived.

Has pulled his whiskers all out. Hoax space, Penn. Dec 20. John Howell, who murdered his four children on his Starucca farm weeks ago and tried to kill himself, has been in jail six weeks without speaking. He glares in his cell and has torn hair, now wearing a shirt sleeve. He will be tried.

The 12 year old bright girl inspires the holiday effort to aid city poor children, with Miss Cleveland and several society ladies attending.
A farmhouse near Dix road burned as residents found the body of Frank Knoch his wife and a child amid the charred ruins. Fire likely started from an oil stove used to heat food for a sick baby. Relatives George and Frank Albert were present, but identity unclear due to condition. A search recovered the bodies.
