Creditors seek receiver for failed J Francis Brown & Co

Creditors of the failed banking and brokerage firm J Francis Brown & Co met yesterday. Liabilities total 184 000 dollars, assets seven thousand, and amounts due from customers and employees near 200 000 dollars. A receiver will likely be requested. The committee notes little prospect for dividends and questions whether the 10 000 dollar capital was customer money or others funds. The business under the Brown name may have been operated by another local firm. Managers and subordinates are blamed for the collapse, with emphasis on the handling of margins, collateral, and underwater accounts. Bankruptcy is urged, to be pursued by Oct 20, 1903.
