Boston starts a new traffic reform with chalk lines at downtown crossings. State Guardsmen, including Colonel Deckrow, will warn pedestrians against diagonal crossings and encroaching on auto spaces while obeying traffic officers. The program emphasizes education over coercion with guards stationed in congested areas.
A riot at an Omaha jail ended in a fire set by lynchers trapping about 100 inside. Rioters cut hoses as the fire department arrived, trampling authorities and prompting a federal troops call. Policemen were beaten and one man killed in the chaos.
Labor leaders rallied strikers in Gary Indiana urging firmness against officials. John W Johnston called the labor action the biggest strike in memory and warned backing down would set labor back twenty years. Samuel Gompers predicted steel strike victory and said the issue would be raised at Wilson's Washington conference starting October 6.

William Brown, a Black man accused of assaulting a white girl, was dragged from the county jail in Omaha after a nine hour mob struggle. Sheriff Michael Clark and deputies defended the jail top story as the mob hanged Brown from an electric light pole to prevent further bloodshed.
A mob attempted to lynch Omaha Mayor Ed P. Smith as he faced the crowd. A rope was tossed around his neck but a police officer freed him. he was carried to a surgeon’s office and then to a hospital, remaining unconscious at midnight.
