Heavy rain has driven streams to freshet levels in northern Maine. The threat centers on Katahdin Iron Works where the dam at Silver Lake may fail, endangering the Silver Lake Hotel housing about a dozen families from Bangor New York and other places as the proprietor warns guests of possible calamity before morning.
Water neared the hotel piazza as guests led by Rev E F Pember General A B Farnham prepared to move to higher ground. Locals fled to hills while mail carriers were overwhelmed by Pleasant River floods. A Bangor Aroostook bridge at Brownville faced danger and the Penobscot rose 16 inches with more expected. Potato fields will suffer heavy damage from unprecedented rain.
Rainfall for September reached nearly five inches by midnight, about two inches above normal. The unusual storm overbalances prior drought, lifting the yearly average above normal. The prior dry spell had left many New England wells dry and thirsty.

Rain cancels Red Sox Browns doubleheader. Tigers visit for two games. Langford stops the Dixie Kid in five rounds at the Armory. Gano and Margin lose in stake races at Columbus.
