The Boston School Board rejected a petition by teachers to heat classrooms. About 300 pupils were sent home earlier this week due to cold rooms. Chairman Joseph Lee says coal savings justify delaying heating for several weeks if students come to school adequately dressed.
Minneapolis report says W. J. Kennedy, cigar store owner, alerted federal agents to Swedish matches bought through a local wholesaler that secretly included small steel springs. Authorities seek whether the shipment was meant for Europe rather than the United States.
Secretary McAdoo announced the second Liberty Loan details for public sale on Oct. 1. The issue aims at 3 billion dollars or more with an excess limited to half of any over subscription. Bonds carry 25 year maturity and may be redeemed at 100 years by the Treasury.
Mayor Curley faced the Finance Commission in a public investigation of city business. He testified about transactions involving his former business partner Francis L. Daly and two Daly relatives, Peter J. and Edwin P. Fitzgerald. Curley appeared at City Hall and then the commission on Mason Street.
James M. Curley appeared before a commission, alternately scowling and smiling during a five minute interval. He asked to be excused until 10 this morning and was granted. He was in the room under ten minutes with his chief secretary Charles O Power.
At Camp Devens on September 27 military and civil authorities moved to curb liquor sales to soldiers of the new national army. Two civilians were arraigned before Judge Mahoney on illegal liquor selling charges and sent to East Cambridge jail. Four more men were arrested and await arraignment, while two soldiers are held in the guard house.

McDonald of the Eighth Battalion saved Howard by steadying him and preventing his fall under the truck.
