Nee Claims Finn Death Was Accidently Caused

Friends of John Finn visit his home after his death on Saturday night. Michael Nee, jailed on accusations, maintains the fatal wounds came from Finn’s fall on a street corner after a quarrel with Finn. Miss Reagan saw the dispute and recalls Finn insulted her before the incident. She did not witness Nee strike Finn.

National Booksellers and Newsdealers Convene in Boston

The thirteenth annual convention of the National Association of Booksellers Newsdealers and Stationers will meet October 6 and 7 in Boston at Wells Memorial Hall and 987 Washington Street. Over 200 delegates are expected to attend to discuss publisher alliances and postal law changes. Any nonmember dealer may participate with credentials and proof of good faith, and must not operate in a city with a union headquarters.

Five Cyclists Arrested for Sidewalk Riding in Malden

In Malden on September 27, Chief Spaulding and Officer Johnson arrested five cyclists for riding on the sidewalk along Salem street. Work on the street railway forced the riders onto the sidewalk and a prior complaint cited a party of about sixty speeding on the sidewalk. Names not released.

Expelled by Masons for Immoral Conduct Byrne and Lederer

New York reports the expulsion of playwright Charles A. Byrne from Main Lodge 1% after a commission found charges of immoral conduct against him to be true. Ida Florence Lederer, wife of theatrical manager George W. Lederer, linked to the case, had an affair with Byrne. The lodge ordered Byrne expelled with costs set at seven dollars. Byrne pleaded in his defense but was escorted out. Lederer and Byrne were once friends. Lederer revealed Byrne's plays. In 1894 reports claimed Mrs Lederer left her husband for Byrne, a sensational affair leading to Lederer’s divorce in November 184.

Footpad Attacks Girl Near Weehawken Ferry

Miss Martha McMullin is attacked by a footpad while walking from her sister's house to the ferry on the Weehawken heights. She resists after refusing advances, cries for help, and pursues the assailant with bystanders joining in. Doctor Winters Indicted in Emma Bartels Murder Case

Chicago reports anonymous letters accusing Dr Winters of crimes after Emma Bartels's death. Grand jury indicts him on murder charges while two other women testified about similar experiences at his home. Victims include Tilly Taddy and Bertha Clayton. The case centers on Bartels found dying at his residence after seeking work.

Solitary American Clipper Solitaire Dismasted in Gale

The American clipper Solitaire of Bath Maine, left Philadelphia Sept 19 for San Francisco, was towed into Quarantine by the British steamer West Indian after a September gale. Dismasted since Sept 23, the ship rolled in heavy seas and lost three masts, but towage succeeded 450 miles to port. Built 1879 at Bath, Maine, 1462 tons net register.
